What started out as a picnic lunch by the lake to celebrate Fiji Day 🇫🇯 ended up being a late lunch at the golf club!

We woke up yesterday to rain and thunderstorms, so our plans had to change pretty quickly. Luckily, we still had a booking at the golf club that hadn’t been refunded, and they were kind enough to let us use one of their rooms at the very last minute. And thank goodness our lovo pit was covered, because the boys still managed to get our lovo done that morning!

Growing up as Fijians from remote islands teaches you a thing or two about being resourceful. You learn early to be prepared, to think on your feet and to make things work with whatever you have, regardless of the circumstances. These are life skills we carry with us wherever we go.

And if there's one thing we Fijians know, it's that when we don't have what we need, we usually know someone who knows someone who does! 😅

You'd be forgiven for thinking this whole celebration had been planned months in advance. The truth is, most of it came together just a few days before, with some arrangements only confirmed on the day itself! 😂

That's what makes it even more special. A little resourcefulness, the right people and everyone willing to do their part can make just about anything happen.

Vinaka vakalevu to our Yatu Lau family who helped pull this together, especially our hardworking ladies from The Oasis Mount Isa, a Fijian business that is proudly Fijian-owned! 🇫🇯🩵

Bula vinaka! 🇫🇯

Happy Fiji Day to Fijian Australians across Greenway and beyond, and everyone celebrating in Fiji.

As Australia’s first Cabinet Minister of Fijian heritage, I’m proud of the enormous contribution Fijian Australians make to our communities every day.

Australia and Fiji are vuvale, family, united by shared values and a commitment to building a stronger and safer Pacific together.

What a privilege it was for Yatu Lau Charity to represent our Fijian community at the 2026 Mount Isa Multicultural Festival, organised by the Catholic Church community here in Mount Isa.

We were proud to take the stage and share a piece of who we are through this Lauan Vakamalolo, a traditional dance from the Lau Group of islands in Fiji.

It took us a few practices to get this Vakamalolo right 😅 but when the time came, we were proud to stand together and represent Fiji.

Living away from home makes moments like this matter. Our dances, our language, our customs and our traditions are part of what keeps us connected to where we come from. And when we are given an opportunity to share that with the wider Mount Isa community, we should take it with both hands.

Vinaka vakalevu to the Catholic Church community for inviting us and giving the Fijian community a place in this year’s celebration.

We came as Yatu Lau, but we were proud to stand there for Fiji 🇫🇯

Malo vakalevu to everyone who danced, practised and helped make it happen.
