Together We Walk 💛

It was lovely to see so many people join us for Together We Walk on Thursday 10 September, marking World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK? Day.

People carried their lanterns during the walk before hanging them in the remembrance installation at the Civic Centre Lawn. As the sun went down, all of those individual lights came together and transformed the whole space. It was a beautiful reminder that while a single light can cut through the darkness, together our lights can do so much more.

An extra special thank you to the people who came forward to name loved ones they have lost to su***de and speak about what that loss has meant for them.

Thank you to our guest speakers, Councillor John Doyle, Father Mick Lowcock and Vicki Prosper.

We would also like to thank Mount Isa City Council and Mount Isa Civic Centre for their in-kind support, Mithangkaya Nguli YPA Indigenous Corporation for providing the food and volunteers, the Rotary Club of Mount Isa South West Inc for bringing their barbecue rig and cooking the snags, and myPolice Western Queensland - Mount Isa QPS for escorting the march.

Thank you to everyone who walked with us. Su***de prevention is everyone’s business, and we all have a part to play. 💛

Together We Walk is happening tonight 💛

Please join us as we walk together on World Su***de Prevention Day and R U OK? Day to remember those we have lost, raise awareness and remind people that they are not alone.

We’ll gather at the Frank Aston Museum car park, near McDonald’s, from 5.30 pm and start walking at 6 pm. The walk will finish at the Civic Centre Lawn, followed by a sausage sizzle, blessing and guest speakers.

Everyone is welcome. Bring your family and friends and walk with us.

Join the Mount Isa Su***de Prevention Network as we walk with lanterns to remember those we’ve lost, stand beside those who are struggling, and hold hope for change.

Thanks ABC North West Queensland, the Network appreciates your support🙏🥰

💙 A free Community Healing Event will be held in Mount Isa this weekend, aimed at strengthening connection, wellbeing and support across the city.

Mount Isa Su***de Prevention Network President Candy Blackwell said connection is especially important in remote communities, where people may have fewer services close by and longer distances to travel for help.

"It doesn't necessarily have to be professionals that you reach out for help. Your friends and family are great choices to talk to if you're having difficult times." 🗣️

The event will include creative activities like rock painting and lantern making, drumming circles, yarning and connection spaces, and pop-up blue trees where people can leave photos, memorial tributes or messages of hope.

There'll also be a free BBQ with steak burgers.

Candy said the event was shaped by people with lived experience, including those bereaved by su***de.

"People who have that experience of su***de loss heal with one another," she said. "They don't heal in isolation."

The event is funded through the Western Queensland Primary Health Network

🕯 NEW TO THIS YEAR'S EVENT – COMMUNITY MEMORIAL SPACE 🕯

As part of our Community Healing Event, we will be creating a dedicated Memorial Space to honour and remember loved ones lost to su***de.

We invite community members to bring along a small photo of their loved one to be respectfully displayed during the event. This space has been created with care to acknowledge those we have lost, share memories, and remind one another that they will never be forgotten 💛
