๐ŸŒฟ Biodiversity Month | Week 1

What does biodiversity actually mean?

Put simply, itโ€™s the incredible variety of life around us - plants, animals, insects, fungi, microorganisms and the ecosystems theyโ€™re part of.

Here in the Southern Gulf, that means everything from our native grasslands and woodlands to rivers, wetlands and the wildlife that depends on them. ๐Ÿข๐ŸŒฑ๐Ÿฆœ

Healthy biodiversity helps support healthy landscapes, productive grazing systems and resilient ecosystems.

This Biodiversity Month, weโ€™re taking a look at some of the species, habitats and people helping protect the Southern Gulfโ€™s natural environment.

Stay tuned over the next four weeks!

Biosecurity equals food security ๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ๐Ÿ„๐Ÿ๐Ÿฅ

From paddock to plate, every meal starts with preparedness, prevention and protection. By working together to detect and respond to animal disease threats early, we all help to protect the livestock industries that feed Australia.

This , take a moment to learn how preparedness strengthens Australia's resilience and helps safeguard our food supply.

When it comes to biosecurity, being prepared today helps protect tomorrow's herds and flocks.

South32 and Southern Gulf NRM have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting the region's landscapes and natural assets. Through a renewed partnership for 2026-27, the organisations will continue to support coordinated w**d management across the Cannington Mine-Yurbi rail loading facility corridor.

Building on the success of previous work, the project will continue to target infestations of Prickly Acacia, Mesquite, and Parkinsonia, three Weeds of National Significance that threaten grazing productivity, native vegetation, watercourses and biodiversity throughout the McKinlay River catchment.

By prioritising infestations in the upper reaches of the McKinlay and Gilliat River catchments, control efforts can help reduce the movement of w**d seeds downstream, protecting river systems, riparian vegetation and neighbouring properties from future spread.

This renewed investment provides certainty for participating landholders and supports long term management of invasive w**ds. By working together across property boundaries, landholders and South32 are contributing to healthier waterways, more resilient landscapes and improved productivity across the region. The 2026-27 agreement ensures this important work can continue, creating lasting environmental and agricultural benefits for the catchment and the communities that depend on it.

This project is funded by South32 Cannington Mine
