143 ACU at the 2026 Mount Isa Street Festival

Wednesday 5 August the Desert Rat Cadets participated in the Mount Isa Street Festival as part of the Mount Isa Rodeo Week.

The cadets were very enthusiastic caught up in the excitement of the parade handing out lollies and talking with the local crowd.

The cadets put on cam cream for the effect and CDTLCPL Van Deventer who was dressed in the Ghillie suit was a welcomed sight for the spectators.

A great community support activity for the unit and a boost for our Australian Army Cadet image within Mount Isa.

Well done Cadets and to the Mount Isa City Council and community for a great event.

143 ACU Exercise Western Owl 2026

The Mount Isa Desert Rat Cadets from 143 ACU were in the field again recently for Exercise Western Owl 2026.
This exercise had the cadets conducting an Observation Post and fieldcraft activities.

Unit section commanders delivered section orders, conducted Cam and Concealment lessons, run through section formations and use field signals in the field with their sections.

Revision with knots and lashings is always welcomed by the cadets.
Last day ended with a search and recover exercise where we saw all lessons taught including Ratel put together in one exercise. We saw great leadership by our junior leaders this weekend.

The weather was cool but stunning for the weekend and the cadets enjoyed the time in the field just check out some of our faces on the cadets.

The Cadet Lance Corporals of the unit picked the two ‘Cadet of the Biv’ this time around.
Awarded to cadets who had displayed our Australian Army Cadet Values during the biv.
Recipients were cadet recruit Mel Kaumavae-Ramirez and cadet recruit Braydon Whittaker.
Well done cadets!

Many thanks to the cadet leadership group and staff of the unit for another successful cadet biv in the outback.
