🔥 Campfire cooking at Cub Scouts! 🍎

Last night was one of those great Cub Scout nights — fire, food, learning new things and plenty of fun along the way.

We made apple crumble silver turtles - apple, muesli, butter, cinnamon and a sprinkle of coconut sugar, wrapped them in foil and cooked them right in the coals. Depending on the Cub Scout, the sugar sprinkle was variable. And yes… they tasted as good as they looked! 🤤

For some of our Cub Scouts, it was also their very first time striking a match, lighting a fire or using a knife — little moments that are actually pretty big when you’re learning to do these things for yourself.

Lots of Outdoor Adventure Skills "I can" statements ticked off without it feeling like ticking boxes — just Cub Scouts having a go, learning new skills and enjoying the fire together. 🔥

And judging by one Scout Leaders face, the apple crumble passed quality control. 😂🍎

🔬 Cub Scitech!

On Saturday night, some of our Eastern Hills Cub Scouts headed into Scitech for Cub Scitech, joining around 300 other Cub Scouts and Cub Scout Leaders from across WA — with the whole place to ourselves for the night!

We enjoyed the Science Theatre, where we immersed ourselves in a hot and cold demonstration, with plenty of experiments and a few surprises along the way.

We did so much exploring and youth-led fun! Electronics, gravity, balls and plenty of things to push, pull, test and try.

Such a fun night out with our Cub Scouts, getting to explore Scitech after hours and share the experience with friends from all over WA. 💙⚜️

🐺 For 110 years, Cub Scouts have been making friends, learning new skills, taking on adventures and creating memories that last a lifetime.

⚜️ Now we can celebrate this incredible milestone with the special 110 Years of Cub Scouts commemorative blanket badge.

Whether you’re a current Cub Scout, a Leader, or part of the wider Scouting family, it’s a great way to mark this special chapter in Cub Scout history.

🥇 The badge was the result of a Scouts Australia nationwide design competition with the winning design coming from a team effort by talented youth members Alessandra, Rory and Annaliese from Scouts Queensland.

Wondering what the Scouts have been up to? From the Perth mint hike to the operation night hawk, with some good rock climbing and archery in between. Why did the chicken cross the road? 🐔

To get to Cub Pet Night, of course!

Last night our Cubs brought along some of their furry, feathered (and slightly less furry!) family members to meet the rest of the Unit.

Everyone had a chance to introduce their pet, tell us a bit about them and share what goes into looking after them.

And while Pet Night is obviously a lot of fun, there is some Scouting happening amongst all the pats and chaos too!

Caring for a pet is a great way for our Cubs to learn responsibility, empathy and respect for other living things. Standing up and telling everyone about their pet builds confidence and communication skills, and getting to learn about everyone else’s pets encourages plenty of questions, curiosity and conversation. And when the youth ask for the activity, we call that

Scouting doesn't always have to look like knots, hiking and campfires. Sometimes learning through doing looks a lot more like chickens, rabbits, dogs, tall stories of fish and whatever else managed to make its way through the hall doors! 😂🐾

Thanks to all our families for helping bring Pet Night together — and especially to our very patient four-legged and feathered visitors!

Eastern hills scouts would like to thank Bendigo bank for the Grant for the workshop equipment / Tools , That the scouts then used to make some wonderful possum boxes for the local possum animal sanctuary with the rehabilitation of injured wild life back into a natural habitat. A huge Thankyou to all the wonderful parents who also assisted in the back ground. And the possum animal sanctuary for the very informative tour.

Our Cubs were kept warm and cosy on their recent camp thanks to a generous donation of firewood.

We really appreciate the local businesses and community members who get behind our Scout Group — sometimes it’s the simple things (like a nice warm campfire!) that make a huge difference to a weekend away. ⚜️

What does Scouting help young people become?

When people think of Scouts, they often think of camping, campfires and hiking.

Those are certainly part of the adventure.

But they're not the outcome.

Scouting helps young people become more confident, resilient, independent and capable. It gives them opportunities to lead, to try new things, to overcome challenges and to discover strengths they never knew they had.

Every game, every hike, every camp and every challenge is an opportunity to learn something new—not just about the world, but about themselves.

That's what Scouting is all about.
