Today we remember The Battle of Milne Bay (August–September 1942) was a key Allied victory in Papua New Guinea, where Australian forces repelled Japan's first major land defeat of the Pacific War. Fought in treacherous conditions of rain, mud, and malaria, the battle centered on the capture of vital airfields built by the Allies. Despite an initial Japanese success, they underestimated the ~9,000 Allied troops and air support from RAAF Kittyhawks, which proved crucial in destroying enemy barges and supplies. The defeat at Milne Bay disrupted Japanese plans to advance on Port Moresby, turning the tide of the campaign in Papua.
