The second earthquake that struck Nepal on the 15th May 2015 deepened the country’s economic crisis, worsening damage caused by the initial quake.

Nepal faced further destruction to roads, infrastructure and farmland, delaying recovery efforts and increasing rebuilding costs. With agriculture disrupted and the Monsoon season approaching, the risk of food shortages grew significantly.

The combined impact of both earthquakes pushed total recovery costs beyond $10 billion, leaving Nepal heavily reliant on ongoing international support.

In the aftermath of Nepal’s devastating earthquake, rescue efforts were remarkable, with most of the Nepalese Army deployed alongside volunteers and international organisations. Despite difficult conditions, survivors were found days later, supported by technology like crisis mapping and strong global funding.

Local groups such as Kathmandu Living Labs also played a key role in connecting people with aid. While challenges remained, the resilience and collaboration of all involved continue to support Nepal’s recovery.

The 2015 Nepal earthquake left a trail of destruction across the country, flattening entire villages and damaging countless historic sites. Thousands of homes were reduced to rubble, leaving many homeless.

At Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, chaos unfolded as strong aftershocks forced authorities to open all exit doors, with stranded travellers fleeing onto the tarmac. With limited staff and damaged facilities, operations were sporadic, delaying both relief and commercial flights.

Cultural heritage sites suffered immense loss, including the iconic Basantapur Durbar Square and the historic Dharahara Tower, which collapsed, claiming lives. Temples, palaces, and religious landmarks across Kathmandu, Bhaktapur, and Patan crumbled, erasing centuries of history in moments.
