During the 40 million years after Australia separated from Gondwana (one half of the supercontinent Pangea), the continent was made up of mostly rainforest ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ๐ŸŒณ, which is nothing like the 20% of arid desert that occupies Australia today ๐Ÿ˜ฒ.

The Daintree represents an incredibly unique area of the continent that offers a vital insight into Australiaโ€™s rich history of flora and fauna ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ„๐ŸŒ.

Moreover, the Daintree and broader Wet Tropics region provide vital scientific information for interpreting fossils of flora and fauna in Australia, along with understanding evolution in general.

Monique had the pleasure of reconnecting with Didge and Laurene who have led Douglas Shire Sustainability Group for almost a decade. Didge and Laurene are returning to their home town in regional Victoria to be closer to family, and handing over the DSSG baton to a new committee of local legends.

CAFNEC wants to acknowledge the incredible contributions Laurene and Didge have both made to conservation and environmental advocacy in the region. They have fought against multiple destructive developments in the Douglas shire with grit and determination and they will be sorely missed. We wish them luck and know that wherever they are they will still be advocating for their community and local environment.
