Hagstones: Clay, Story & Symbol – 4 Hour Workshop
There’s something quietly powerful about a stone with a hole through it.
Known as hagstones, these naturally formed stones have been carried for centuries as protective talismans. In folklore across the UK and Europe, they were believed to ward off negative energy, protect the home, and even help you “see what isn’t easily seen.” Hung by a doorway, worn on the body, or kept close - they’ve always held meaning.
In this 4-hour hands-on workshop, we’ll create our own hagstones in clay-bringing together story, symbolism and simple, beautiful making.
You’ll learn how to:
Shape and form your own hagstone
Create strong, high-fire loops for hanging
Explore design and composition
Work with slip decoration, some wild clay local slips will be available
Use sgraffito to carve into surface layers
Add texture and depth with raised slip details
Each piece becomes personal-whether that’s a protective object, a meaningful gift, or a decorative wall hanging. You will also create a small amount of companion beads to extend your design into a series.
What will you make?
A finished hagstone (or two) that reflects your own story-ready to hang, gift, or keep.
What do I do with it?
Hang it in your home. Gift it to someone. Add beads and create a small installation. Or keep it close as your own quiet talisman.
