Community Bank BDCU has always been a strong supporter of the Men’s Shed. Recently, Business Development Manager Chris Boucher commissioned a series of handcrafted cheese boards to be used as corporate gifts. Our members have already completed the first 10 boards, with more currently in production. This partnership is a great example of how local organisations can work together to deliver meaningful, personal touches to the community.

The Shed members were recently asked to restore an old table covered in decades of carved names and dates that no longer suited its new purpose. As the before‑and‑after photos show, the team removed the top, planed it back, sanded it smooth, and finished it with a matte polyurethane coat. The result is a beautifully refreshed table and a very happy owner.

We’ve got such a great mix of interests in our Men’s Shed, and this week Stephen is giving us a look at one of his latest projects. He’s merged his love of restoring cars with his woodworking skills to build a custom wooden dash that fits modern accessories without losing the original look of the car.

This week we wrapped up a great community project for Moss Vale Public School. They asked us to make 14 crates and a display rack from recycled wood so the students could show off and sell the vegetables they’ve grown for their Mossy Meadow's Market Days.

A very rewarding project all round, and we’re glad to say the school was very happy with the result. Turns out old wood can still be good for something other than collecting dust and making us feel guilty.

We had a win on the board and off it! One of our talented members, Ray, entered a fully handcrafted chess set - board, pieces, and even a fancy case to keep it all behaving - into the Moss Vale Show 2026 and snagged first prize! Checkmate, Ray… absolutely brilliant effort.

This week we’re pleased to finally complete a project that’s been a long time coming. The Jubilee Southern Highlands Daylight Lodge No 162 asked our Shed members to create an honour board, and Rudi - one of our life members and a highly skilled woodworker - took on the challenge. With almost no assistance, he has crafted a true masterpiece. Here you can see Steve Blinkhorn from Jubilee Southern Highlands Daylight Lodge proudly displaying the honour board in its new home at the Moss Vale Masonic Centre.

Brooke McGee, Program Counsellor with the Raise Foundation , visited our Shed today to talk with us about mentoring. She explained that mentors meet with a student for one hour each week during school Terms 2 and 3, with full training and ongoing support provided—no formal qualifications needed. It was an excellent and informative talk, showcasing yet another non-profit organisation making a real difference here in the Southern Highlands.

Our Shed is excited to share that we’ve received a generous $5,000 grant to purchase a new thicknesser, which will greatly expand what we can do in the workshop and improve the quality of our projects.

A big thank you to the Australian Men’s Shed Association for this funding and for their ongoing support of our Shed and community.

To kick off the New Year, we’ve updated our fire safety and first aid equipment over the break. A huge thank you to one of our major sponsors, Moss Vale Village Pharmacy, for generously donating a brand‑new first aid kit. Support like this is what makes our community special — sharing expertise and generosity to benefit all our members.

After wrapping up our bee hive base painting in October, our members headed over to the Bowral Honey Farm for a super relaxed and interesting session about how bee hives work and the amazing world of bees. Hamish showed us around the honey farm, shared loads of cool info, and spoiled us with a yummy morning tea and honey tasting. If you’re even a little bit curious about bees, this is a tour you really don’t want to miss.
