The $70 million demonstration plant in Victoria’s Latrobe Valley is the world’s most advanced project in the expanding sector.
US Export-Import Bank issued a Letter of Interest indicating it would consider providing up to ~US$122m (around $200m) in financing for the plant, subject to approvals.

Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) has the ability to bring large company's and large investment into the Latrobe Valley. The technology works and has been in use since 1970 around the world. One of few projects that has the capacity to create jobs for the Latrobe Valley is the Maryvale Energy from Waste facility.
Like a lot of industrial projects there mixed opinions formed from fact and fiction. A few facts are - stage One of the facility's construction would reduce Victoria’s net CO2 emissions by an estimated 270,000 tonnes annually. This project would support jobs at the Paper Mill, and support a further 500 Victorian jobs each year for the three years of Stage One construction and 455 jobs ongoing. The project will generate energy from the controlled combustion of non-hazardous residual waste materials – waste that would otherwise go to landfill.

HAZELWOOD MINE PIT LAKE:
If spread out over land the estimated amount of water required -
640 GL would cover 640 square kilometres at a depth of 1 metre. This is roughly the size of the city of Adelaide or Singapore submerged in a waist-deep pool!

Last year BHP made a profit after tax of $13.1 BILLION. Companies like BHP who continually try and rip off their workers are the problem. Imagine if we taxed BHP at the same rate its workers are taxed. We could provide so much more for the citizens of this country. The Mining & Energy Union leading the way once again.

We've watched as announcements were made in NSW and WA this week supporting their regions and their industries. Those working at Yallourn, Victoria are still nervously waiting to see what support will be coming their way. The human element in transition must not be forgotten. This week I have been supporting Yallourn workers with the facts, one of those is the MEU will never give up fighting for a true transition for our members and other workers.

West Australia will continue to prop up Griffin Coals critical supply to the state's power grid. Premier Roger Cook said the lights would go out if it failed.

A potential deal that will could see a $10 billion data centre built near the former Hazelwood power station site is being proposed.
Singapore-based Keppel Ltd. has secured the rights to lease 123-hectates of local industrial land. Approvals for large scale, large employment industries should be considered for fast tracking. The Latrobe Valley cannot afford to lose these large scale projects to other areas of Victoria.

You don't need to make it one or the other. China are smashing out renewable energy projects, but they are also making sure they have proven, reliable coal fired power supporting their grid.
China has 85 coal fired units scheduled to open in 2026, accounting for 55GW of the global 63GW.
China is also leading the way in deploying solar. The country installed 240GW of new solar capacity in the first nine months of 2025.
