More than 1,500 Australian plant species are listed as threatened under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation 1999 Act (EPBC Act), but how many are secured in our collections?

The Australian National Botanic Gardens, the Office of the Threatened Species Commissioner and BGANZ are building the first national inventory of EPBC-listed species held ex situ. We're asking every Australian botanic garden, arboretum and seed bank to take part.

The inventory will track progress towards the national target of securing 80% of threatened species in insurance populations by 2027. Taking part is simple: the minimum is a yes/no list of the EPBC taxa you hold, in any format.

Back in July, “funga” officially entered the Cambridge Dictionary, adding weight to the growing call for fungi to be recognised alongside flora and fauna when we talk about the natural world.

When I first saw the word funga, I wondered what the difference was between fungi and funga. It’s actually beautifully simple:

Fungi are the organisms themselves — the plural of fungus. Mushrooms, moulds, bracket fungi and truffles are all fungi.

Funga describes the fungal life of a particular place or ecosystem — just as flora describes its plant life and fauna its animal life.

So now we have the perfect trio: flora, fauna and funga.
