Little Squeak update 🥹🐾

Firstly… could he BE any cuter?! That tiny pink nose, those ridiculous little feet & that face peeking out of the blankets. Honestly. 💔😂

Squeak is doing well so far & reminding us why it’s such a privilege to share our homes, gardens & communities with possums.

They can be noisy, cheeky little neighbours, but they’re also an important part of our native ecosystem. They pollinate, spread seeds, help keep our bush healthy & belong here just as much as we do.

So if you’re lucky enough to have possums around your place, please make room for them. Protect old trees & hollows where you can, keep pets contained at night & remember that sometimes “living with wildlife” simply means learning to share the space. 🌱

For Squeak, that future is exactly what we’re working towards- growing him up wild, healthy & ready to head back where he belongs 🐾🖤🌱

Where it all began 🐾❤️

Long before there was Mel & the Menagerie, there was this little feral creature, already completely besotted with every animal that crossed my path. 😂

I’ve spent most of my life bringing home the injured, orphaned, unwanted, weird & wonderful.
Some things have changed a lot since these photos were taken… but apparently the basic operating system has remained exactly the same.

Decades later, the Mel is older, the Menagerie is bigger, the animals are wilder, the vet bills are substantially more offensive & somehow this childhood obsession became a registered rescue.

Turns out it was never really a phase. 🤭🖤🌱🐨🐾

If you hit wildlife or find an animal on the road:

1. Stop safely & check for signs of life.
2. If the animal is deceased, check the pouch — there may still be a live joey inside.
3. Call Wildlife Victoria on (03) 8400 7300 — 24/7 — or your local wildlife carer

Please don’t offer food or water, & never pull an attached joey from the teat.

Slow down. Check pouches. Make the call. 🦘💔

A little bird flu awareness without the panic button 🐦💚

H5 avian influenza is something wildlife carers, rescuers & the wider community need to be aware of, but the aim here is being observant, keeping yourself safe & knowing what to report, not assuming every unwell bird has bird flu.

If you come across sick or dead wild birds:

• Avoid direct contact
• Note the time, date & location
• Grab a quick photo/video if it’s safe to do so
• Report groups of five sick or dead wild birds to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline – 1800 675 888

Some species should be reported even if there is only one sick or dead animal, including pelicans, penguins, black swans, birds of prey & marine mammals such as seals, sea lions & dolphins.

Most importantly — please don’t handle sick or dead wildlife yourself. Keeping a little distance protects you, your animals & our wildlife.

Awareness is useful.
Panic isn’t. 💚

Little Squeak 💛

Our tiny baby brushtail is doing well so far, but it’s still very early days. He’s a true little velvet, incredibly young, completely dependent & needing round-the-clock warmth, specialised feeds & careful monitoring while he grows.

At this age, things can change quickly, so for now we’re taking every good feed & settled sleep as a little win.
