June is International Pride Month. This month is a chance to celebrate LGBTQIA+ pride and liberation, and to acknowledge the work that still needs to be done to address the discrimination faced by the q***r community.

Held annually, June marks the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. Taking place on June 28 1969 these protests are seen as a significant event in the fight for LGBTQIA+ civil rights and equality.

In Australia, protests also took place, with “International Gay Solidarity Day” on June 24 1978 marking an important milestone in the fight for equality. This protest saw the birth of the Sydney Gay and Le***an Mardi Gras and is why the Mardi Gras Parade is led by a group called “The 78ers”, the brave folk who protested on that day.

Pride Month is a time to show LGBTQIA+ people that they should be proud of who they are and how they contribute to our world. The Family Place are very proud to support our LGBTQIA+ community 🏳️‍🌈

The Moruya yawa-mba ngarn sessions kicked off earlier this week and it was a beautiful start to the journey!

Our first session was all about settling in, meeting one another and creating a safe, welcoming space for the weeks ahead. Together we yarned, set our group agreements and began our Wellbeing Mandalas, a creative way to map our own stories and strengths as we move through the program. It was a warm, diverse group and the sense of connection was felt straight away.

Next week we begin in Mogo, Batemans Bay and Broulee and there is still time to join. These sessions are free, culturally safe and open to both Aboriginal and non Aboriginal community members. Come along, slow down, yarn with others and explore practices that strengthen health, identity and belonging.

Register now so you don't miss out.

Connection to Community reminds us that wellbeing grows when we feel supported, seen and part of something bigger.

As part of the yawa-mba ngarn, 'Speaking Place', wellbeing program we celebrate the shared presence, support and energy that community brings — the moments of cooperation, kindness and belonging that help us feel grounded and uplifted.

Join us as we explore what community means to each of us, and how we can continue to strengthen those connections together.

Introducing our yawa-mba ngarn facilitators, Patricia Ellis, Jordan Nye, Eliza Cannon and Ness Shannon. We’re honoured to have such an accomplished team delivering this new wellbeing program developed for the Eurobodalla community.

Auntie Patricia Ellis, OAM, is a proud Brinja Yuin and Walbunja woman, respected Elder, and cultural knowledge holder on the South Coast. With more than 42 years of teaching at TAFE, she continues to lead the way in keeping Dhurga language strong across Certificates I, II and III. She also runs Minga Aboriginal Cultural Services, sharing culture, language and stories with communities across NSW. A twice‑published author and Deputy Chair of Katungul, Auntie Trish is deeply loved as a mother, grandmother, aunty and mentor whose work strengthens culture for generations.

Jordan Nye is a Walbunja man from Mogo whose work spans Aboriginal health, community and youth services, cultural consultancy, government roles and education, grounded in a deep commitment to culture and healing. He has worked alongside remote Northern Territory communities and built strong relationships across the Eurobodalla and beyond, bringing a calm, culturally informed presence to every space he supports.

Eliza Cannon is a community development practitioner whose work spans primary teaching, market gardening and advocacy for socially just, culturally appropriate and ecologically sound food systems. After running her market garden on Walbunja Country for four years and recently working with Anangu women on food security in the Central Desert, she now brings her passion for community wellbeing, cultural integrity and good food to her work across the Eurobodalla.

Ness Shannon is an Art Therapist, Counsellor, Behaviour Specialist, Artist and Cultural Consultant with a strong passion for mental health and wellbeing. A dedicated educator whose career spans Prep to Year 12, Ness has worked in both all-Indigenous schools and remote NT communities, co-creating programs such as the Strong Girls Indigenous health initiative. She now facilitates community and private workshops for all ages and abilities in her studio gallery in Mogo and across the Eurobodalla Shire, combining creativity, connection and wellbeing through her work. Ness was recognised for her contribution to inclusion and community wellbeing with the 2025 Eurobodalla Inclusion and Diversity Award.

Come along, yarn with others, and explore practices that strengthen health, identity and belonging in a shared, culturally safe space. Both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people are encouraged to join the program.
