Western Plains Spinners and Weavers Craft Group is a not for profit community organisation whose aim is to bring together folk, to encourage, inspire and enable those who practise, or who wish to practise, hand weaving, spinning and allied crafts. Western Plains Spinners, Weavers & Craft Group was established in Mortlake in 1971, with the aim of bringing together people who practise the art of han
d weaving and spinning. Membership quickly grew to over 100, and in 1976, the group found a permanent home in a historic bluestone building, next to the Soldiers Memorial Hall (Hamilton Highway). Many two and four day Craft Schools were run nearby Glenormiston College, only ceasing when Glenormiston was closed a few years ago. The group still thrives with members drawn from many parts of the Western District. Meetings are held monthly, on the 3rd Saturday at 12:30 and every Wednesday, from 10.30am to 2pm, members gather to spin, weave, dye fibre, knit, crochet, felt, embroider and do patchwork. Everybody is welcome - beginners to experts!
