The Shed hosted a high tea style fundraiser for Volunteers for Palliative Care Inc. last Thursday and raised over $2,500. It was a pleasure to help such a worthy cause.

If Ikea can do it, so can we. Maitland Girl Guides requested a street library as a flat pack in bare timber. It was duly assembled, disassembled, packed and delivered. The guides were delighted and did a much better job of painting it than we could have done.

We were approached recently by Hunter Valley Community School and asked to provide a prize for their upcoming raffle.

Our resident wooden toy wizard dug deep and built a model train engine, carriage and track in record time. We were delighted to donate this to the school and it will now be the major prize in their raffle.

It is always a pleasure to support worthy causes in our community.

One of our foundation members had his contribution to the shed over the last 16 recognised today when John Bilkey was awarded life membership. John has been an active member of the shed since it was first established and his abilities as a woodturner, woodworker and gardener have been put to good use. In addition, John has sat on the committee for many years and served a term as president. Congratulations, John, your contribution is really appreciated.

We had a two man cross-cut saw donated recently, and since a two man cross-cut saw is of very limited use and really hard work, we decided to have a scene painted on the blade and mount it instead.

Enter Lou, who wears a Singleton Men's Shed shirt as well as ours, who mentioned that Singleton Shed has a saw painter of some renown. The saw was returned a fortnight later with a rural scene featuring some of Morpeth's landmarks all painted from memory.

One of our major fundraisers is catering the BBQ at Maitland Netball. It's generally a fun day feeding the masses and interacting with the locals, but today, not quite so much. The recent rain left the place a quagmire and so we got bogged getting in to set up. We borrowed a four wheel drive to tow the trailer out and finally got set up in a new location.

Starting an hour or so late, we were well behind with the catering and worked like trojans all day to meet the demand. Fortunately, we had the "A" team on the job and the blokes rose to the challenge.

To cap it all off, we got bogged again getting out. Nevertheless, it was still a good day and more memorable for all the wrong reasons.
