Very sad to see this report this morning.
We passed Mr Zand on our journey, and noticed he was travelling solo. We offered him some water as he looked buggered, and as we passed we spoke amongst ourselves about the courage it takes to embark on such a journey without the support we were afforded.
This emphasises how dangerous our roads can be and how lucky we were to have the support we had.
Support is everything, if you need it, ask for it, it might save your life.
RIP Iman Zand.
Cyclist Killed on Dukes Highway Near End of Charity Ride from Perth to Melbourne
===============
This is absolutely tragic, we send our love and condolences to the family.
You may have seen us post about this legend before. :(
It has been confirmed that the cyclist tragically killed on the Dukes Highway at Brimbago last Tuesday was nearing the end of a charity ride from Perth to Melbourne. Iman Zand, who was just three days away from completing the grueling journey, was raising funds for Save Soil, Camp Quality, Lifeline, and the Royal Flying Doctor Service Victoria.
Having started his ride from Perth on October 3rd, Mr. Zand had traveled nearly 3,000 km, crossing the Nullarbor, before reaching Brimbago, southeast of Keith, where the accident occurred. He was struck by a van and died at the scene.
Emergency services were called to the Dukes Highway around 11:50 a.m. following reports of the collision. The driver of the van, a 43-year-old man from Naracoorte, was arrested the following day. He has been charged with causing death by careless driving, had his license immediately revoked, and is set to appear in the Naracoorte Magistrates Court on January 15th.
Leading up to his ride, Mr. Zand had expressed that the challenge was about pushing his physical and mental limits, all while supporting causes close to his heart. "This ride isn’t just about the kilometers I’ll cover or the personal endurance I’ll test; it’s about making a real difference for the world we live in and the people who need our help," he said.
In his final Instagram post the day before the crash, Mr. Zand shared an inspirational message: "When something touches your heart, act on it. Plan for it and make it happen. You’ve got to go for it. Time and energy are limited, so use them consciously. Do what really matters to you."
