Foodbank Queensland

Foodbank Queensland Foodbank Queensland is the largest hunger relief charity in the state. At Foodbank, we believe everyone should have access to food.

There are Australians going without every day and we are working hard to change that. Foodbank in Queensland provides millions of kilograms of food and groceries to more 350 frontline charities and over 400 School Breakfast Programs each year. Together, we give food and hope to more than 150,000 Queenslanders in need each week. Every $1 donated to Foodbank Queensland provides 2 meals to someone in need.

🍄Meet the ingredient: Mushroom

Mushrooms are a versatile, budget-friendly ingredient that can help stretch meals further while adding flavour and nutrition.

They’re easy to cook, work across a range of dishes, and can be stored in the fridge for several days

Did you know... mushrooms are one of the only plant-based foods that can naturally provide vitamin D when exposed to sunlight.

Access to simple, nourishing ingredients plays an important role in supporting Queensland families, and we’re working with our partners to help ensure good food reaches the community during this time 💜

This World Environment Day, we recognise the important role food rescue plays in reducing waste and helping Queensland communities access nutritious food.

Every day, Foodbank Queensland works with food donors, farming partners and industry partners to rescue quality surplus food that might otherwise end up in landfill. Instead, it reaches Community Partners and helps provide meals for people experiencing food insecurity.

Food rescue is not only good for the environment. It is one way we help create access to nutritious food while reducing waste.

Last month, Townsville came together for The Cure Starts Now Australia convoy, with over 300 trucks and 100 bikes raising funds for childhood brain cancer.

Foodbank Queensland team member Kelly was proud to join the convoy in our purple Foodbank truck, “Barney”.

A powerful example of community spirit in action đź’ś

We were honoured to be welcomed to Government House by Her Excellency, the Honourable Dr Jeannette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland, alongside our generous supporters.

The evening was a meaningful opportunity to recognise the difference our supporters make across the community. Their ongoing generosity and commitment enable us to help provide food to more than 135,000 Queenslanders each week.

Our thanks to the entire Government House team for hosting such a memorable and special occasion.

We thank our interim CEO Brett Kapernick for his attendance along with our Board of Directors, Board Chair Mike Hill, Natasha Olsson-Seeto, Rhyll Gardner, Linda Miller, Anthony Joseph, Sue Johnson, Grant Cassidy AOM and Fiona Maxwell

“By the end of the pay fortnight, there isn’t much left. The fridge is bare.” - Evelyn, grandmother

In their 70s, Evelyn and her husband are raising their grandchildren and doing everything they can to provide for them.

But with the costs of fuel and food continuing to rise, even the basics are becoming harder to afford.

Right now, more families are finding themselves in the same position.

Together, we can help make sure they have access to the food they need.

Happy International Day of the Potato! 🥔

Potatoes remain a versatile and accessible staple, supporting simple, nutritious meals for many households.

We continue to work with Queensland farmers and our partners to help ensure staple foods like this reach communities who need them.

Fun fact: A single potato can contain more potassium than a banana, helping keep Queenslanders nourished and energised.

Mandarins are in season! 🍊

They’re an easy‑to‑peel option that can support simple, lower‑cost snacking, and store well for everyday use. Kept in the fridge, they can stay fresh for up to two weeks.

Access to fresh produce continues to play an important role in supporting Queensland families, and we’re working with our partners to help ensure it reaches the community during this time. 💜

As we approach National Reconciliation Week, we are reminded that reconciliation is an ongoing commitment to truth, respect, and stronger relationships between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and non-Indigenous Australians.

This year’s theme, All In, calls on all of us to move beyond words and commit to reconciliation through action, accountability, and everyday practice. At Foodbank Queensland, we recognise reconciliation as a shared responsibility. It means listening, building genuine partnerships, and embedding First Nations voices and priorities in how we work.

We’re proud to have received conditional endorsement of our Reconciliation Action Plan from Australia, marking an important milestone. As we finalise the submission, including artwork and media assets, we continue to build on the meaningful work already underway with First Nations communities and partners across Queensland.

Through recent engagements, including Close the Gap Day, National Apology anniversary commemorations and Reconciliation Queensland events, we continue to learn, listen, and strengthen how we show up with respect and humility.

Reconciliation is a long-term commitment, and at Foodbank Queensland, we remain committed to being All In.

During National Reconciliation Week, we encourage everyone to learn more, explore available resources, and attend local events in your community, and continue that commitment year-round.

As National Volunteer Week comes to a close, our hearts are full. đź’ś

Over the past week, we've celebrated the incredible people who give their time, energy, and compassion to help ensure no Queenslander goes hungry.

This year's theme, 'Your Year to Volunteer', reminds us that the impact of volunteering reaches far beyond a single week. To all our volunteers: thank you for showing up, lifting others up, and reminding us what community truly means. đź’›
