The Sunlight Centre We provide free therapeutic crisis intervention support for su***de ideation and self-harm through face to face counselling.

Self-referrals welcomed, and no Mental Health Plan needed. We are now seeing clients please call 1300 259 724 and one of our therapists will be in touch about an appointment.

☀️Our Vision ☀️

The Vision of the Sunlight Centre is to see Australia replace su***de, self-harm and mental health stigma with self-care, acceptance and hope.

☀️Our Mission☀️

The Mission of the Sunlight Centre is to support people and local communities during times of crises of su***de ideation and self-harm through face to face counselling, support and professional services free of charge. Therapeutic Plan of the Sunlight Centre

To bring therapeutic support directly to anyone that needs it in the local community, the greater Brisbane areas, and beyond to lower stigma around mental health, su***de and deliberate self-harm. The Sunlight Centre’s therapeutic plan follows Three Stages:

☀️ Psycho-education – bringing awareness and coping mechanisms to the
community
☀️ Action – Free one to one therapy sessions for people in crises
☀️ Follow-up – Group support for clients and families that have gone through
therapy at the Sunlight Centre

The Sunlight Centre will offer a warm safe environment where men, women and young people can avail of free face to face, one on one counselling sessions. Our team of therapists use the Sunlight Centre’s Therapy Model throughout all of the Three Stages of support. After the initial assessment, these sessions are available to all men, women and young people who are thinking that they want to end their lives. Sunlight Centre also offers free support to men, women and young people who feel they would like to reduce, stop or just talk about their deliberate self-harming. The Sunlight Centre facilitates workshops, seminars and school and club talks about how our ‘Trauma Points’ can build up pain and depression and suicidal ideation. We also offer group talks and sessions for people that have gone through bereavement by su***de, or have themselves, attempted to end their lives.

Mental Health Week! So here are 3 practical Mental Health Tips on Self-Awareness from our CEO and Clinical Director Ken Loftus.

Tip 1:
Thinking about your thinking. Understanding metacognition and recognising those unhelpful thinking patterns.
Tip 2:
Feeling your feelings. Learning to recognise the difference between thoughts and emotions.
Tip 3:
Listening to your body. Understanding how our brains interpret physical sensations (including those dodgy tummy moments!).

And speaking of the number 3...

Something exciting is coming from The Sunlight Centre real soon, so stay tuned!

Thank you to Jason Hurst, Executive Director of Diverse Voices, for taking the time to meet with Sunlight's CEO Ken Loftus today at our Centre in Morningside, to connect and share more about the work of Diverse Voices.

It was a valuable opportunity for both organisations to learn more about each other’s work supporting people across our community.
Diverse Voices provides important support for LGBTIQASB+ communities across Queensland, including peer support, counselling and su***de prevention initiatives.

The meeting also gave Ken the opportunity to share more about the Sunlight Centre’s free crisis counselling service and our our professional development training for mental health practitioners.

There are many ways to Check in on someone. But before you do... think if during and after checking in, will that person have felt; Heard, Validated and Cared for?
We use Active Listening Skills to ensure someone feels as Heard as possible.
To validate we share that we notice their emotions (remember, you don't need to agree with their point of view to validate their feelings).
And has the person felt genuine care from you? If the person is not a close friend or family member, perhaps remember boundaries, and the person can still feel 'professionaly cared for' within your work places P&Ps.
To learn more about Active Listening skills and more, visit our Training Page for Sunlight's practical mental health programs and training.

Did you know that more than 60% of Australians are reported not to have a Will? This could cause your wishes to not be considered.
Thankfully The Sunlight Centre has partnered with EveryWill who allow people to create free Wills. Really... Free. No percentage lost, no subscription, a free Will, a way to ensure your wishes around the people and causes that you find important are considered.
