Sadly I just cancelled our September intake of 3.5 thousand chickens. Instead of coming to us as rescues they will be slaughtered.
The next 3.5 thousand chickens are due to be rescued in January; we must focus on being ready for then so that those girls don't also get killed.
I have tried my best to be ready for September but despite personally paying for everything other than the vet bills we still haven't been able to keep up with the ongoing vet bills by donations alone. We still owe the vets a couple of thousand dollars with 2 more booked in for surgery in a few weeks time and around 20 due for treatment next month.
After 10 years of rescue and 80 thousand plus rescued chickens we have reached a point where, because we don't rehome chickens who require ongoing medical treatment, the 300 odd current "residents" with ongoing medical treatment perpetually exhaust all current donations...and some. Each time we rescue a new batch of several thousand chickens adds around 30 odd more to the resident flock of ongoing medical treatment girls.
The ICU is also currently taking up most of my time, taking my focus away from making the necessary maintenance/repairs. I know it's not the girls in ICU fault; however, I truly deeply resent every moment in ICU, including every single sleepless night.
Perhaps when we hit the 12 year mark some of the "residents" will be reaching 14 years old and passing on at a similar pace to new girls coming in. That would at least stabilise our annual vet bill. In the interim please consider joining the amazing regular donors. It's also tax time so please consider making a tax deductible donation.
