Over the past few weeks, Impact Environmental has delivered several comprehensive Snake Awareness Training sessions to mining personnel at Stanmore Isaac Plains Complex.

Every session is designed specifically for the audience, providing covering snake behavior, hazard awareness, safe response procedures and practical guidance on managing snake encounters in the workplace.

In addition to this, this week Aaron and Talina along with our two friendly pythons Odin and Loki put together a presentation to approximately 70, Year 1 students. Their fantastic questions and enthusiasm impressed Aaron and participated in an activity to reinforce what to do if you come across a snake:

A recently published study in Wildlife Research https://doi.org/10.1071/WR25195 demonstrates how thermal detection technology can significantly improve the detection of feral animals during aerial control operations.

At Impact Environmental, we apply thermal imaging not only for native wildlife monitoring and offset management, but also to detect and manage feral pest species across large and remote landscapes. It's great to see scientific research continuing to validate the practical benefits we're seeing in the field.

I came across this post and it got me thinking…

Would introducing a bounty for problem feral species in your local area actually help reduce the issue?

On one hand, it could encourage more active control and community involvement.
On the other, there are questions around how it would be managed, regulated, and whether it delivers long-term results.

Feral animal management is a real and ongoing challenge across many areas, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.

Keen to hear your thoughts—would it work where you are?

In our experience, the most effective outcomes come from well-planned, coordinated programs backed by data, technology, compliance, and experienced operators.

A north west council's trial into a feral animal bounty is showing early signs of success, after hundreds of cats were destroyed in the first six months.

🐈201 feral cats and 90 feral dogs were handed over to Mount Isa council since October last year, as part of the year long trial.

🐕Another 529 feral cats were trapped during the same period as part of councils regular management.

💬Mount Isa city councilor James Coghlan said the program has been a success so far.

"I can't remember those numbers being as high as that," he said.

"I think that many cats out of the place is good. I think it's well worth it and it shows.

▶Introduced last October, approved participants can can claim $25 per feral cat tail and $50 per wild dog tail captured within the Mount Isa local government area.

The majority of bounties have been claimed by a handful of regular participants, but Mr Coghlan said anyone can get involved.

"Just approach council and just, just register your interest and, and they will take it from there," he said.

"We have 10 approved participants in the bounty program and they'll be the gauge I guess.

"If it's not worth their while, then they won't, they won't keep going."

🐨 Thermal Drone Surveys Supporting Koala & Greater Glider Conservation 🌿

Over the past 12 months, Impact Environmental has been conducting nightly thermal drone surveys across Central Queensland to detect and monitor Koalas and Greater Gliders as part of a client's projects.

By combining thermal drone technology with proven ecological field verification, our team can efficiently survey large and complex habitats while maintaining high confidence in the data collected. This integrated approach improves wildlife detection and supports better environmental outcomes during project planning and construction.

Continuous Improvement

Last weekend I travelled from Moranbah in Central QLD and headed south to the Nioka Rifle Range near Gunnedah NSW to attend a long-range shooting course delivered by my good mate Scott Pattel from Rifleman’s Hangout.

Courses like this are essential for maintaining and advancing the skills required for best-practice, humane pest animal management. Shooting Long-range requires a deep understanding of environmental variables such as wind, elevation, temperature, humidity, barometric pressure, Coriolis effect and spin drift, all of which can dramatically affect projectile performance and shot placement.

While load development and equipment refinement can improve precision and consistency, success at extended distances ultimately comes down to understanding and reading conditions correctly and time behind the trigger. As a shooter we are the greatest inconsistency when a shot is being taken, closely followed by wind. This is where having or being a skilled spotter who understands wind behaviour can make all the difference when engaging targets at long range.

Over the course we engaged targets from 100 m out to 1600 m, pushing both equipment and personnel skillsets to their limits.
Now I have never been in a position where I would take a 1600m shot on a feral animal. The majority of all shots taken are under 100m but for some pest animals shots out to 400m is quite common as any human presence within that distance causes them to spook and flee.

This is why we train at these long distances, to hone and develop skills at these extended ranges, we have the confidence in our equipment and ourselves which make the closer shots stress free and easy.
