💛💛💛 Thank you for helping continue Dr Sarah Barlow’s legacy through your generous donation today. 💛💛💛

This month, we remember Dr Sarah Barlow, a much-loved Immanuel graduate from the Class of 2000, whose life and legacy continue to inspire. 💛💙

Sarah dedicated her life to paediatric medicine, research and teaching before sadly losing her courageous battle with bowel cancer in 2021. Before her passing, she founded the Dr Sarah Barlow Bowel Cancer Foundation to fund vital research into early-age bowel cancer, a disease that affects over 1,500 young Australians each year.

As we mark what would have been Sarah’s birthday on 31 October, we invite our Immanuel community to join us in keeping her mission alive by supporting or sharing the Foundation’s work. Together, we can help continue Sarah’s legacy of care, compassion and hope.

We would like to congratulate Flinders University researcher Dr Martha Menburu for being awarded the 2025 research grant from the Dr Sarah Barlow Bowel Cancer Foundation!

The research project aims to improve surveillance strategies and early-stage detection of bowel cancer in young Australians, employing a personalised approach incorporating study of the microbiome in a biobank of samples in young people collected prior to colonoscopy in those with bowel cancer or pre-cancerous colorectal polyps. The hope is to identify unique microbial signatures in these samples and compare with results obtained from individuals over 50 years old and control groups.

The project will be performed in collaboration with Dr Renee Smith (South Australian Genomics Centre, Adelaide) and Associate Professor Erin Symonds (Team Leader, Bowel Health Service, Flinders University). The research team will utilise new integrative approaches to characterise the microbiome profiles in stool. Findings will support development of targeted screening tests.

Our foundation would like to Shout Out to the Sydney Children’s Hospital and all those who participated in the Clinical Exam Bootcamp.

Each year participants have donated to our foundation in lieu of their registration fee for the eduction day.

The event took place on Sunday 2 March and the donations we received totalled over $4,000!!

Thank you to Dr Louis Cheung who coordinated this.

In addition our team will soon be reviewing some more submissions for research grants and we look forward to providing an update on this!
