Race report rnd 6 South Australian Large Scale
As I sit here reflecting back on Rnd 6, I feel a warm glow about how the day was, the weather report on the Saturday forecast rain for Sunday, members asking the question "are we racing", my response was simple "absolutely ". On arrival to the track, it was dry, smooth and looked the best it ever had, it was going to be a cracker, we had a stacked heat of 14 8th scale drivers, Baja is just getting stronger and if we get too many more Short course trucks it will be 2 heats.
In 8th scale we had our usual fast guys plus Mark, Chris & Glen from SDMCC came up up for run to show us how to do it.
Qualifying in the dry presented some tight racing with Chis Esteve taking TQ by the smallest of Margins with, Glenn, Mark, Damien and Andrew right there seperated by mere tenths.
BAJA qualifying would see some more close racing with a notable names missing, it was anyone's show, and these guys a where out to take points with Brian Warner taking the TQ in dry and loose conditions
SHORT COURSE qualifying was the one to watch today, first round was a bit of a rough one, but the second Round was cleaned up and the driving was improved, the racing was tight and mistakes could not be afforded or it was 1st to last real quick, Andrew showed a clean pair of heels to get the TQ .
With the rain starting to fall at the start of lunch, the decision to run finals in the wet was made, something that has never been attempted on this track, but the track looked to good not to run, there was no standing water but it was "Wet", Credit has to go out to Michael McDonald for the work he has been doing on the track.
8th scale finals
This was a tight race, lead changes, passes at the front of the field, but patience, luck and a clean run was the only way to win this one, and our friends from SDMCC brought that, but they didnt get it easy, with Andrew and Damien showing them we know how to race hard . Well done to them and I look forward to racing them again soon.
1st Chris Esteve
2nd Glenn Wickham
3rd Andrew Zachoryj
BAJA finals
By now the track has a certain shine to it from the rain, and its still raining, my first thoughts are these blokes will struggle, I couldn't have been more wrong, grip was coming up, and they had one of the best races I have seen them have in while , the cars had plenty of grip and again, mistakes would see you at the back of the field real quick, but today was Brian Warners day, with Dave showing consistency again and Shaun making his first trip to the podium.
1st Brian Warner
2nd Dave Iversen
3rd Shaun Belton
4wd SHORT COURSE
Its time for the big one, with Lachie Phillips returning after a break and all the usual suspects fired up this was set to be a big final, and it didn't dissapoint one bit, by now the track was properly soaked, the first 5 minutes was chaotic whilst everyone settled in and found the groove, and there was a groove, but Andrew found it early and got the gap he needed to control the race, the final 2 podium spots was a wide open battle, with positions changing to the end, Lachie settled in to come from the rear for a solid 2nd with Brian and Michael trading places until the finish
1st Andrew Zachoryj
2nd Lachie Phillips
3rd Brian Warner
What a day, I think the track was a real champion today, It took everything the weather could throw at it and with 1 more round left there is still time to clinch a couple of classes, who is going to win what, the last round on the 14th of June is going to be a big one, come join us and let's see who gets the silverware.
Thanks to Franco from MCD RACING AUSTRALIA for his support for this series and we will see you all soon.
