Monarto Safari Park is the largest safari park that will exist outside of Africa, spanning more than 1,000 hectares of fauna and flora and the only zoological park to be completely power neutral. Owned and operated by Zoos South Australia Monarto Safari Park opened in 1983 as a closed special purpose breeding facility. After officially opening to the public in October 1993, Monarto has evolved int

o a true biopark representing a unique blend of a conservation and zoological park. Its principle purpose is to provide a place for the conservation of Australian and exotic wildlife, public recreation and education. Monarto Safari Park is located 45 minutes (70 kilometres) from South Australia's capital city, Adelaide, and is the gateway to the picturesque Murraylands region. The park is open every day of the year from 9:30am to 5:00pm and focuses on African and Australian animals. The zoology and botany of these continents is reflected in the parkโ€™s major exhibits; Chimpanzee, Cheetah, African Painted Dog and Lion viewing platforms, Southern White Rhinoceros Boma viewing area, African Waterhole viewing platform and Yellow-footed Rock-wallaby walk-through exhibit.

The journey continues.

Episode 3 of our special retrospective series follows the arrival of Pak Boon and Tang Mo from Taronga Zoo Sydney, before the final member of the founding herd, Putra Mas, makes the journey from Perth Zoo to Monarto Safari Park.

With all five Asian elephants now calling Monarto home, the focus shifts to what comes next โ€“ building confidence, forming social connections, and allowing the elephants to settle into their new surroundings at their own pace.

Turn your sound on and let's take a mindful moment in the Mallee Scrub together...๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿ”Š

Close your eyes and listen. What can you hear?

This is the delicate song of the critically-endangered Mallee Emu-wren - a sound that was once at risk of disappearing forever.

It's a song worth saving. ๐ŸŽถ

Thanks to vital conservation efforts such as Zoos SA's dedicated breeding program, these tiny birds have been given a second chance. But their future still relies on us and we need your help.

This End of Financial Year, your tax-deductible donation can help secure a feathered future for the Mallee Emu-wren and other threatened species.

Our week may have wrapped, but there is always time for snacks! ๐ŸŒพ๐Ÿฅ•

We couldn't resist sharing this behind-the-scenes look at feed time with Monarto Safari Park's ungulate team.

A big thank you to keepers Allie, Tam, and Dylan for putting together this video of the Giraffe herd, Southern White Rhino crash, Barbary Sheep, and Nyala enjoying their favorite treats.

Sound on for all the crunches! ๐Ÿ”Š

๐Ÿฆ“ A new arrival has joined the herd in Wild Africa at Monarto Safari Park.

A Plains Zebra mare has recently given birth to a healthy foal, with the s*x yet to be determined. Visitors on the Wild Africa Safari may be lucky enough to spot the youngster exploring alongside its mother, who has formed a close bond with her foal and is actively protecting and caring for her new arrival.

Did you know? Zebra foals are often born with brown or reddish-brown stripes rather than the bold black stripes seen in adults. As they grow, their stripes gradually darken.

And just like fingerprints, no two zebras have exactly the same stripe pattern, making every individual completely unique.

Keep an eye out for our newest herd member on your next Wild Africa Safari. ๐Ÿฆ“โœจ

Today we are handing the camera over to Keeper Hannah for moment of bliss with Cheetah, Kwatile. ๐Ÿ†

There's nothing better than a good scratch session!

Unlike other big cats, Cheetah donโ€™t roar. Instead, they can growl and make sounds that are more like a high-pitched chirp.

Cheetahs also bark to talk to each other, and they can purr both when they breathe in and when they breathe out! ๐Ÿพ

Heโ€™s the man! ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐Ÿ˜

For todayโ€™s Takeover, weโ€™re hanging out with Corryn who put together this amazing video of bull elephant, Putra Mas.

He is now out of musth and keepers have loved getting to know his chilled-out personality and watching him use his impressive tusks to tuck into cocos palms - one of his all-time favourites!๐ŸŒด

Watch him in action, and head to the comments below to catch the next episode of our โ€˜Bringing Elephants to South Australiaโ€™ series on YouTube. ๐ŸŽฅ๐Ÿ‘‡

It's keeper takeover time! ๐Ÿฆ’

Let's dive into Keeper Haidee's camera roll and get within a tongue-lick of Volta. ๐Ÿฅ•โœจ

While it's definitely tasty, hand feeding fruit and veggies to the giraffe is also part of their conditioning training.

It allows keepers to get close to the herd within their habitat so they can do vet checks, easily give medication, and build strong, positive relationships with each animal.
