Hello participants, volunteers and supporters of Disabled Surfers SA,

Advising that the DSA SA committee met earlier this week to discuss whether we hold a March event at Moana beach.

As we believe there is still an risk to people's health when in the surf we have reluctantly decided to cancel March.

Whilst it is disappointing not to surf this summer our priority will always be to put the health and safety of participants first and foremost.

We hope you will continue to support us and we are optimistic that we can get things happening again in November 2026.

Regards from the DSA SA Committee,

Hello participants, carers and volunteers who enjoy what we do at Disabled Surfers SA,
The DSA SA committee have been diligently monitoring the beach conditions at Moana since November when we reluctantly made a decision to postpone our first event.
After careful consideration we have decided to postpone our next event in February as there is no guarantee we can safely host everyone involved due to the algal bloom.
We must always exercise a Duty of Care to our participants, carers and volunteers so everyone’s health and safety remain our number one priority.
Our next event is planned for 22nd March and whilst we are keen to proceed we will only do so when we are confident it’s safe for everyone.
We will evaluate the beach conditions as we get closer to March and will advise if we can surf again before winter.

Hello to all our friends at Disabled Surfers SA,
Like the many similar organisations that utilise our local beaches, we have been closely monitoring the Algal Bloom situation to determine whether it is okay to enter the water safely.
So, after careful consideration we have taken the decision to postpone our next “Have a Surf Day” planned for Sunday 30th November as we feel there is too much risk to if we proceed.

As all would understand we have a Duty of Care to our participants, carers and volunteers and whilst we are always keen to go surfing our committee has made this decision in everyone’s best interests.

Our next scheduled event is planned for 22nd February 2026 and whilst we are hopeful it can go ahead we will only do so when we feel it’s safe for everyone.
We will keep you updated as we get closer to February so please stay connected with us until then.

MESSAGE FROM THE DSA S.A. PRESIDENT RE THE ALGAL BLOOM

Hello to all our surfers, carers, sponsors and volunteers,
As beach lovers we are all concerned about how the Algal Bloom will affect our surfing this coming summer so to update you here is the latest information we have.

The current bloom in South Australia is part of the Karenia species, and it is not a new type of algae. Algal species within this genus have been researched worldwide for nearly 90 years, with multiple studies documenting their effects on fisheries, humans and coastal ecosystems. Therefore, the impacts of Karenia algae are well-studied by scientists and experts, it is not guesswork, and so the current advice is based on long standing and factual data.
To access this information you can read it
on this webpage - algalbloom.sa.gov.au

We are also fortunate to access up to date information from Surf Life Saving SA who are actively working with the State Government on how to approach ocean based activities this summer.
The current advice from the Government is that beaches remain open, but to avoid discoloured or foamy water.
So at this stage beach events for this summer are scheduled to proceed as planned, and assessments will be made each day for local conditions.
As with all DSA events individuals must make their own personal decision on the day as to whether you feel safe and well enough to participate.

We will keep everyone up to date as we get closer to our first event on 30/11/25 with the hope that we can continue as planned.

Best wishes to you all,
Russell Markham
