Mission Beach Historical Society

Mission Beach Historical Society Purpose Statement: Mission Beach Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, exhibiting and interpreting the history of Mission Beach.

Our committee started with Judy Heath, Diane Bull, Margaret Remilton, Sue Foley, Sandal Hayes, Dr Penelope Goward, Dr Valerie Boll (president) and Ken Gray (secretary). We will hopefully include more who are active on the history of the town so contact Ken Gray if you wish to be on our committee. Email [email protected] or phone 4068 7617. We will start with small steps: define our processes fi

rst then start some oral histories of older folk in town who have lived here longest - any suggestions are very welcome. Contact Ken or comment on the page.

Congratulations to CHRIS FORBES as she celebrates her 95th birthday today. Chris and her late husband Gary, first settled in Mission Beach 57 years ago. Chris commenced teaching at the Mission Beach State School when it became a two teacher school in 1975. I’m guessing many of you would have fond memories of Mrs Forbes.

Three cheers for RUTH PIKE as she celebrates her 87th birthday today. Ruth & hubby David, moved to Mission Beach in 1971 to farm bananas before moving into other work ventures. Ruth has been very active in our community over the years but today she enjoys spending her time surrounded by her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRENDA HARVEY (92 years young today). Brenda has been heavily committed to community and environment over the 67 years she has lived at Mission Beach. Instrumental in establishing Meals On Wheels and C4, Brenda received an Order of Australia medal in 2012 for community service as testament to her hard work and dedication. We are more the richer for having her in our lives. Thank you Brenda for your hard work.

Last week, we heard of the sad passing of 94 year old, Ab Berry-Porter. Ab’s grandfather was one of our very earliest pioneers, arriving in our district in 1901. Ab himself grew pineapples and bananas here for 35 years before retiring with his wife Gloria to the Atherton Tablelands. Porter Promenade, Porters Creek and Porters Straight stand in testimony to this multigenerational family who have lived and continue living at Mission Beach. Our deepest condolences to the Berry-Porter and Harle families. Ab was a delightfully interesting and funny bloke and he will be greatly missed.
