Today, on ANZAC Day, Freemasons NSW & ACT join with Australians across the nation to remember and honour all those who have served, those who continue to serve, and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our freedoms. We reflect on the anniversary of 25 April 1915, when Australian and New Zealand soldiers first landed at Gallipoli. This event would come to define the spirit of the ANZAC and mark the beginning of a legacy of courage, resilience, and mateship that endures to this day.

More than a century on, we pause in gratitude and solemn remembrance. We honour the men and women of our armed forces who have followed in the footsteps of the original ANZACs, serving with dedication across generations. As the Last Post sounds and silence falls, we remember those who have given their lives, who have done their duty and are now at rest. Lest we forget.

Hi, I’m James, 42, the newest member of lodge Milton. A single dad and a business owner in the Milton community. I became interested in freemasonary and looked at joining approximately 10 years ago but didn’t have the time. And over the years, I saw the great work being done in the community, especially through charity events held by Lodge Milton. After becoming a single parent, I was looking for connection and support. When I reached out to the lodge my daughter and I were welcomed straight away, and I felt a real sense of belonging.
Since joining, I’ve made strong friendships and feel part of something meaningful with a long history. It’s been a very positive step for me and my family. And I encourage other younger men to enquire and join a fraternity that will make any man a better version of himself.

Understanding “2B1ASK1” in Freemasonry

The phrase "2B1ASK1" is a well-known maxim within the Freemasonry community, encapsulating a core principle of the fraternity's membership process. It stands for "To Be One, Ask One," signifying that the only way to join the Freemasons is by expressing a personal desire to do so.

Historically, Freemasonry has maintained a tradition where potential members must take the initiative to join. This means that one must ask a current Mason to be considered for membership. The phrase "2B1ASK1" reflects this tradition, emphasizing that Freemasonry does not solicit members; rather, it requires a voluntary and proactive approach from the individual seeking membership.

Freemasonry values the personal commitment and moral character of its members. To be eligible, one must:

- Be a man of at least eighteen years of age.
- Possess good moral character.
- Have a belief in a Supreme Being, referred to as the Grand Architect of the Universe in Masonic terms.
- Decide to become a Mason of one's own free will.
- Be free to act of one's own volition.
- Be loyal and dedicated to providing for one's family and upholding moral values within the community.

Upon expressing interest, a candidate's character is investigated, and if deemed suitable, they are voted upon by the lodge's members. A unanimous vote is required for the individual to be accepted into the fraternity.

The "2B1ASK1" approach is considered effective as it ensures that those who join do so with a genuine interest and commitment to the values of Freemasonry. It also preserves the solemnity of the decision to become a Mason, as it must be made independently and without external persuasion.

This phrase and the process it represents are deeply rooted in the values of personal growth, moral integrity, and the voluntary pursuit of fraternity that Freemasonry promotes. If you're interested in learning more about Freemasonry or considering membership, reaching out to a local lodge or a known Mason is the recommended first step.

In May 1950, a young man took his first step into Freemasonry. Seventy-five years later, he is still proudly wearing the badge of a Mason. That kind of commitment is rare in any sphere of life. Freemasonry is not a passing interest or a social circle of convenience. It is a lifelong journey built on loyalty, integrity, enduring friendship—and meaningful service to the wider community. When a Mason reaches 75 years of service, it represents decades of shared ritual, leadership, counsel, and quiet acts of charity that extend far beyond the Lodge room.

Freemasonry offers something deeper than attendance at meetings—it offers belonging and purpose. Over a lifetime, a Mason not only guides younger Brethren and becomes a living link to the Craft’s history, but also contributes to charitable causes, supports local initiatives, and helps those in need without seeking recognition. Community service in Freemasonry is often understated, yet profoundly impactful. The benefit is not merely longevity, but relevance: Freemasonry provides a platform to serve others consistently across an entire lifetime.

The Masonic Square and Compasses

Square and Compasses

“As well-represented as the All Seeing Eye is, the Square and Compasses are really the most well known or recognized Freemason symbol. The meaning behind it is quite literal, with the square representing morality in that Freemasons need to ‘square [their] actions by the square of virtue with all mankind’.

The compass then measures the ability to wisely conduct actions within certain boundaries. In other words, together the Square and Compasses remind Freemasons to explore their desires and passions without stepping outside the realms of moral behaviour.”
