Today, we’re celebrating the addition of more than 28 ha of ecologically significant rainforest to Daintree National Park (Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land), with some excellent work by Gondwana Rainforest Trust to contribute to this park's expansion.
Ten properties – acquired by Gondwana Rainforest Trust through their Daintree buyback conservation program – will now be permanently guaranteed the highest level of protection. They support Daintree Lowland Rainforest, an Endangered Ecological Community that provides a refuge for endangered species like the southern cassowary.
Chris Thomas, CEO of the National Parks Association of Queensland (NPAQ), welcomes the announcement and congratulates all parties involved. “NPAQ first started campaigning for the Daintree National Park in 1957, almost 60 years ago, and we’re delighted that the Park continues to grow. National Parks underpin our natural and cultural identity here in Queensland and are a critical part of our State’s environmental legacy.”
Gondwana Rainforest Trust CEO Richard Christian earlier said, “Today's transfer represents one of the most significant milestones in the history of Gondwana Rainforest Trust's Save The Daintree program," and added, "While these properties have been protected since their acquisition through our conservation program until now, their inclusion in the Daintree National Park (CYPAL) formally recognises their exceptional environmental significance, securing them within QLD’s most protected conservation estate."
