Millicent Fire & Rescue

Millicent Fire & Rescue The Millicent CFS (Country Fire Service) provides a volunteer service to Millicent. The Brigade holds training on Wednesday nights from 1830- 2100hrs.

We respond to emergencies such as urban and rural fires, vehicle accident rescue, chemical spills and assist other emergency services as required.

Thousands of our fellow local & further afield CFS volunteers stood ready, yesterday, to drop whatever they were doing to step up & help their communities in the event of a fire.

Temperatures were in the mid 40’s, the humidity was super low & the winds gusty & variable. Add to that a dense, dry fuel load & you have potential disaster if a fire starts.

As a CFS volunteer you are working in difficult, uneven terrain – all whilst wearing the required personal protective clothing.

This is not a normal work environment.

More extreme weather is expected on Tuesday & later this week – into the 40’s again.

Don’t be fooled by lower temperatures on the days in between – fuel loading & curing, together with a decent wind still dictates dangerous fire behaviour.

We are proud to be part of this CFS family that relies on dedication & resilience to deliver the service in high risk environments – at zero labour cost – an important point in times of financial/time pressure.

If you see a CFS member anywhere from any Brigade, take the time to let them know you appreciate their service.

One day, you might just need them.

Stay Safe People.

The business end of the LSE Blackhawk (HLTK 515) snorkel ….. and just one of many resources that get dispatched by the SACFS in the event of a rural fire.

In discussions over the Xmas break it has become apparent just how many people are simply not aware of just how comprehensive the SACFS incident response is during the Fire Danger Season.

Within minutes, once an incident is reported, a minimum of four (closest) CFS appliances to the incident are dispatched to the scene. Hundreds of volunteers make themselves available during the Xmas break for these very moments. A Command Car usually follows.

If the incident falls within a designated Primary Response Zone for aircraft, at the same time as the CFS appliances are dispatched, the closest aircraft package is sent.

In the case of the LSEPRZ, the aircraft package includes two Squirrel helicopters (Air Attack & Air Observer aircraft), three Air-Tractor AT802 Fire Bombing aircraft & a Blackhawk UH-60 Helitak aircraft.

On arrival, the person in charge of the ground resources speaks with the person in charge of the air resources & they coordinate a response for the most effective fire fight.

With fuel levels as high as they are this season, we may experience unpredictable & very hot fire behaviour, making the role of both air & ground challenging.

Spare a thought for our Brigade members in the heat of the day in their Personal Protective Clothing (PPC) – fighting fires, filling fire bombers & serving their communities.

Stay Safe in this Xmas/New Year period & we will see you in 2026.

We had a successful Santa Run on Tuesday night - with Santa handing out between 200-300 bags of lollies to local kids. Lots of "moments" with the faces of both kids & their parents exuding the spirit of Xmas. Lots of happy people, people :-)

Enjoy the time with family & friends.

We look forward to making Santa's Run bigger & better next year !

REMINDER : SANTA'S TOUR TONIGHT 7pm

We had Santa's helpers turn up this arvo to decorate the trucks in preparation for Santa's arrival tonight.

We depart the station, heading down Belt Rd & continue down the route as per our previous post, finishing at the Millicent Brigade Station around 45-60 minutes later.

See you there ...

WE NEED YOU .....
.. especially if you have spare time during summer & want a challenging but extremely rewarding role with Millicent CFS Brigade.

One of our roles is to provide a filling service at the Millicent Airport for the Air Tractor 802 fire bombing aircraft.

Many of you would have seen them operate around Mt.Muirhead last season with very short turnaround times. The realities are if we can't fill them with water & product locally the turnaround times would be way longer & therefore reduce the effectiveness of the aircraft role.

That's why we are looking to recruit an extra one or two more crew to be available during summer for the filling ops.

You don't need to do extensive (days) of training - it is really quite straight forward,

You would be on-call via phone & pager to respond to the airport at a moments notice. Outside of summer there are no commitments for you (our normal rural fire fighting, structure fire fighting, roach crash rescue & HAZMAT roles don't apply)

The role is a critical one in our Aerial Fire Fighting function & you will joining a very dedicated team.

Please consider putting your hand up.

We finally found the plans Santa had scrawled out for the Xmas Run.

The CFS Trucks will leave the Millicent Fire Station at 7pm with Santa on board and follow the route as below with stops indicated by the red dots on the map. The last stop will be our return to the CFS Station.

We will be traveling down Belt Road first & following the track anti-clockwise.

Our timing will vary for the trip based on how many kids we encounter along the way but we shouldn't be more than 45 mins or so for the trip.

We would like to acknowledge the Lions Club Of Wattle Range Lionesses for their generous donation to cover the costs of the gifts.

Some more footage from the security camera system – this fellow seems quite skilled. He has moved from hide & seek behind the turnout gear to giving the pump on Millicent Rescue a run.

One of the crew is obviously going to be missing their turnout pants.

We found some scribblings on the training room whiteboard outlining a route around town & some stops. He is apparently planning to distribute 100’s of bags of lollies to some lucky kids next Tuesday night after 7pm.

He also scribbled something about getting some social posts done & asking people to share it like hell to ensure 100’s of kids turn up.

This dude seems to have a very kind heart & wants to spread the Xmas cheer in what can be a very challenging world.

We are looking to transcribe the scribbles & post a plan on the route & stops shortly.

Stay tuned & remember to SHARE, SHARE, SHARE.

We are receiving very early reports of a white bearded gentleman infiltrating the ranks of Millicent CFS Brigade. He has been spotted at various times using our equipment & playing on our trucks.

The photo below was captured on security cameras only yesterday - clearly a playful & happy individual.

A note was also pinned to the station door stating that his intent was to high-jack a CFS truck next Tuesday night & drive around town delivering small gifts to well behaved children.

We are conducting further investigations to try & ascertain the route he intends to travel & where he will be stopping.

We have also notified SAPOL to assist us in ascertaining the exact identity of this person.

Further updates will be posted as information becomes available.

In the meantime please share this post far & wide to ensure the community is aware of the potential risk of their kids receiving a gift from this fellow & experiencing Xmas joy.

As is our practice, we held our Xmas Show last night where we also announce the "Fire Fighter Of The Year". The criteria for FFOY covers training attendance, incident attendance, general contribution & enthusiasm. The award is intended to reward positive impact on the Brigade.

This year we had a number of contenders, a number of which came from the 8 or so members we recruited during the course of the year. Selecting a person to recognise within a volunteer organisation & the decision is not an easy one with multiple contenders.

This year our FFOY recipient is Jaimie Deland (pictured with son Ollie, partner S***t & daughter Milla). Jaimie has brought a lot of drive, enthusiasm & willingness to the Brigade & actively participated in multiple training programs to increase her Fire Fighting related qualifications.

All our members are well prepared for the Fire Season, willing and able to contribute to the safety of our community, assets & environment.

We wish you all a safe & merry Xmas with your friends & loved ones.

Our crews participated in a range of scenarios on Wednesday night -all aimed at broadening their understanding (and experience) of what it takes to participate in & run an incident. Training is a time to push the boundaries, to fail & then build resilience & capability.

After an overview of SA Ambulance equipment & our Road Crash Rescue gear we progressed to a couple of structure fires & a road crash scenarios outside of Joeys Pizza Bar.

Crew that would not normally have been in command, were. It was a chance to realise some of the complexities & challenges in managing a response crew & sets a very clear scene for areas to focus on for development.

Ultimately we are aiming for a situation where anyone of our crew members can take the front left position in the fire truck & know what they need to do in order to run an incident.

We were pleasantly surprised when Joeys Pizza produced some pizzas for the crew following the scenario. Thanks to the crew at Joeys for thinking of us :-)

Four of our newer members from training are pictured in Jak McAuley, Brendon Hoffmann, Kat Hodgens & Brett Dibley.

It can be challenging to keep volunteers engaged in the game.

Whilst incidents are occurring & we can contribute directly to the welfare of others our volunteers remain satisfied. The key is providing enough experiences during the course of “normal” training nights to keep our membership pushing the limits of what they are capable of. Doing so expands what is possible & stimulates the creativeness needed to come up with solutions midway through a fire fight or rescue.

The image depicts one of our newer members & two of our newest members after completing a Road Crash Rescue (RCR) session last night (Front L-R Kat Hodgens, Jaimie Deland & Jeremy Corman).

The realities & complexities of performing a RCR can only be experienced by doing.

Even if our newest members have not completed their formal RCR training at this stage it is critical that they are aware of what normally happens at an RCR so that they can actively support those that are qualified.

The outstanding piece of last nights training was witnessing the eagerness to engage, to be first to step up & the desire to fully understand the dynamics of RCR.

Well done to our newest members & the attitude they bring forth.

We push the edge in training & we push the edge in our front-line service delivery.

Have you ever stopped to think how your local CFS Brigade operates … how it manages to deliver a service when you need it most ?

Why would a bunch of locals decide to offer their time & effort for zero financial return so that life & assets are protected in your community ?

There is an expectation from the community that they will get the services of the CFS when they need them.

In a world of increasing demands on people, like most volunteer organisations these days, it has become increasingly hard to recruit & maintain membership.

For decades, Millicent Brigade (like many others) has had an approach that is focused not only on acquiring the necessary technical capability to deliver the services but also offer the right level of challenge beyond that to trigger the performance needed in high risk, rapidly changing environments.

It tends to develop the members in a way that builds resilience & the in-the-moment adaptive capacity to change the actions being taken to respond to the way in which the operational environment is changing – all whilst keeping the end state in mind – to save lives, asset & environment.

Rather than if something can be done, it is often simply a question of how. When something as valuable as life is at risk it must be “how” not “if”.

In those moments there is a natural teamwork that develops – synchronsied actions – almost like the rest of the world is suspended for a period of time, with complete focus on the task at hand.

People join CFS to “contribute to community” & then find the hidden gold beneath when the pure satisfaction of helping someone else at this level hits home.

Take note of your local CFS Brigade. Take the time to understand what they really do & why – think about what would happen if they weren’t there.
