Have you ever wondered where our region’s name ‘the mallee’ comes from?
Mallee refers to a group of multi-stemmed gum trees, well known for their incredible survival skills. Instead of a single trunk, they grow several stems or trunks from an underground root system called a lignotuber.
The mallee root stores energy and allows mallee trees to regenerate after damage, even recovering after fire burns the stems above ground.
Thanks to this resilience, mallee landscapes can recover and thrive quickly after fire.
