Monitoring your traps frequently will help you see when fruit fly is in your garden and when to use control methods to protect your fruit.

Insect exclusion netting is an excellent way to protect your fruit. Make sure the net is big enough to completely cover your tree, place it over the tree once the fruit has set, and secure it firmly to keep fruit fly out.

Traps are designed to attract Queensland fruit fly and help reduce the numbers of fruit fly in your garden. Place them in non-fruiting trees in a shady location, approximately 1.5m high, and change the lures every 2 to 3 months.

Deb Bogenhuber knows first-hand it is possible to grow beautiful fruit at home, even now Queensland fruit fly is here in the region.

On her acre of land in Irymple, Deb has a mix of natives and fruit trees as well as raised veggie gardens. Deb is passionate about growing organic fruit and loves cooking using her own produce, so she is diligent about protecting her fruit using insect nets and traps and keeping her garden tidy by picking up any fallen fruit.

She loves to see so many people in the community fighting fruit fly together for widespread control.

Winter is here, and we can take advantage of the colder weather to reduce fruit fly numbers.

Fruits to keep an eye on this season are navel oranges, mandarins, lemons, limes and olives. Check green and ripening fruit for signs of fruit fly and remove and destroy damaged produce.

Helpful information and resources are available at www.fruitflymv.com.au.

Where do Queensland fruit flies go in winter?

Unfortunately, they don’t take holidays and go north – unlike their name may suggest. You can still find them in your garden, but they’ll be lying low.

During the colder months, fruit flies seek shelter in evergreen trees and bushes such as citrus, olive, loquat, avocado and bottlebrushes – anything that provides them with shelter from wind and frosts.

It is a good idea to hang traps in these trees now to help reduce Qfly numbers. Happy gardening!
