Season One is back and under full swing at The Hive!

We celebrated National Sea Week with hands on learning, discovering how squids move using jet propulsion, exploring how erosion shapes our coastlines, and observing what happens when sediment is carried and left behind during our experiments.

There was also ocean-themed sensory play with plenty of scooping and pouring, and a process art table full of recycled materials where sea creatures of all kinds came to life.

Such a lovely start to the season 🌊✨

The Hive Gets River Smart 🛟

Our Hive families joined the legends from the Mildura Life Saving Club for a hands on water safety session.

With the beautiful Murray River right on our doorstep, learning how to stay safe on our river while building skills and confidence together really matters. We jumped into the current, learnt how to spot sudden drop-offs along our riverbank, and practised getting ourselves out of tricky situations, all in life jackets, of course.

Such a great morning learning how to stay safe on our river, building skills and confidence together.

We are taking a deep dive into oceans tomorrow at The Hive.

We have the Wentworth library ladies joining us.

Bring a plastic water bottle- just one of the throw out kind if you can- for a mini ocean experiment.

Here are some resources if you would like to extend on what we are learning: https://www.oceanlifeeducation.com.au/celebrate-seaweek-australia/

See you at the hall!

Sea Week is New Zealand’s unique way to celebrate our special relationship with the sea and marine life.

Over the past couple of seasons at The Hive, we’ve been learning all about our amazing community helpers, and we wrapped up the series with a visit to the ambulance station.

Our families had such a fantastic time exploring the ambulance, practising CPR, and learning how to take blood pressure and pulse. Of course, the sirens and lights were a crowd favourite! It was a brilliant hands on experience!

This visit was a wonderful follow on from our recent first aid course and helped reinforce important skills while learning more about how paramedics support our community and help save lives.

A huge thank you to our local paramedics for welcoming us and sharing their time and knowledge with us.

We’d also like to wish all our paramedics a very Merry Christmas and thank you for everything you do for our community, especially during this busy festive season. 🎄

Professor McGonagall Takes Over The Hive! 🪄

What an utterly spellbinding day we had at The Hive! For one magical Science session, Professor McGonagall herself seemed to take charge, as our hall transformed into Hogwarts for a truly enchanting Harry Potter themed day. This extraordinary experience was lovingly planned and prepared by one incredibly talented and dedicated mum, and the magic was in every detail.

Many of our older children are devoted Harry Potter readers, and while some of our younger ones had never heard of Hogwarts, every activity captured their imaginations all the same.

The day began with great excitement as handwritten, wax sealed Hogwarts acceptance letters were discovered hidden around the hall. Each letter was beautifully personalised, celebrating the unique strengths, attitudes, and special role each child plays within The Hive.

Next came the House Sorting, Hive style. Through a secret potion colour reveal, children discovered their house by way of colour - red, blue, green, or yellow

Our young witches and wizards then got their spell books and visited the wand shop! Once picking their wand they rotated through a series of enchanting experiences: bubbling troll bogey potions, mesmerising dancing water drops, and magical spell writing.

The wand shop was a true highlight. The family behind the day had hand carved every wand themselves, and each child selected one to take home, just as Ollivander would insist, for “the wand chooses the wizard.”

Families had day of wonder and imagination, where learning felt like magic and the Hive became Hogwarts, if only for a while. ✨🪄

Back in November we were lucky to have Jameson from Red Dirt Robotics visit The Hive.

Our community took part in a hands-on robotics and drone workshop, giving the kids a chance to explore technology, problem solving and real life STEM skills in a fun and engaging way.

We absolutely love being able to offer experiences like these and seeing our homeschool community benefit from quality incursions that spark curiosity and confidence.

Huge thanks to Red Dirt Robotics for sharing their knowledge and passion with our kids!

Some of our Hive families took part in a first aid course this week, such an awesome experience!

Our over 10s completed an accredited course, while the younger ones learnt CPR, how to call for help, treat snake bites and handle basic first aid.

A big thank you to the team at Beyond Support and Training for travelling to Mildura and providing our group with the opportunity to learn and fine tune our first aid skills.

Trigger warning: fake blood and medical photos.

This season has been all about experimenting, discovering, and getting messy!

Families have loved diving into messy play, testing out big ideas during science week, and rolling up their sleeves in cooking week, where they made damper and tried out different methods to make butter.

These moments remind us that Hive is more than activities. It’s a place where children can follow their curiosity, families come together, and the joy of learning is shared by all.

A huge thank you to the parents who make all of this possible with running activities. You all make the Hive the wonderful community it is. 🐝
