ERICA Women’s Centre, formerly Midland Women’s Health Care Place Inc. (MWHCP), extends our sincere condolences to the family and friends of Hazel Butorac OAM JP.
Hazel attended the original public meeting to establish MWHCP and served as Chairperson of the Management Committee from 1995 to 2001. In recognition of her significant contribution to the organisation, she was awarded Life Membership in 2003. Today, our Boardroom bears her name in honour of her service and dedication.
During Hazel’s tenure as Chairperson, the service expanded significantly and relocated from its first rented premises at 26 Railway Parade, Midland, to a larger home at 61 Morrison Road, Midland, in October 1997, without any interruption to service delivery. As the organisation continued to grow, it became clear that larger premises would be needed. Under Hazel’s leadership, the Management Committee transitioned to a Board of Management and commenced negotiations with Lotterywest to undertake a feasibility study into securing funding for our current, $1.6 million purpose-built facility.
Hazel proved herself to be an able and committed Chairperson, maintaining grace and dignity while providing strategic leadership and addressing the challenges that arose from time to time.
A passionate advocate for women and marginalised communities, Hazel dedicated much of her life to supporting others. In 2018, she was inducted into the Western Australian Women’s Hall of Fame on International Women’s Day, acknowledging her longstanding commitment to advancing the lives of women across Western Australia.
Hazel was also awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2013 for her service to the community through a range of organisations, including MWHCP.
We honour Hazel’s legacy of leadership, advocacy and service, and are grateful for the lasting impact she had on our organisation and the wider community.
