Middle Swan Cricket Club

Middle Swan Cricket Club Founded in 1878 by C.W. We have a dream that one day we'll see a return of the ladies.

Proudly established in 1878, mere throws from our current home, the Middle Swan CC 78s continue building on our proud tradition of on-field success, whilst making sure we can have just as much fun together off the field as well. Ferguson of Houghton Vineyards, the Middle Swan 78s Cricket Club (MSCC) is one of WA’s oldest Clubs, the oldest continuous club and has a long and proud association with t

he Swan Valley Region. MSCC’s Home Ground is named after local identity Jack Mann who as well as being a Life Member and former President of the Club was the father of Australian Test Cricketer, Tony Mann. Along with Tony, former Club Members Keith Slater and Wally Edwards also played for Australia whilst Tony Mateljan, Dennis Yagmich and Glen Thomas all represented Western Australia. Over the years, MSCC has also produced numerous First Grade West Australian Cricket Association (WACA) players and Swan Helena District Cricket Association (SHDCA) Representative Players. The Club formed a Ladies Team back in 1956 with Millie and May Brajkovich making it into the WA Squad to play against the visiting English Women's Team. Middle Swan has one of the most successful Swan Helena Districts competition records having won a total of 26 A Grade, 1 A Reserve, , 5 B Grade, 1 C and 1 E Grade Premierships - An impressive 34 in total

Since the Swan Helena and Perth Cricket Association's merged the club now is proud to compete in the Perth Swan Cricket Association (PSCA), with a couple of titles with our new Association. In 2025/2026 (our 148th season) we have registered 2 senior men's teams in the C and H grade One Day competitions in the PSCA and welcome players of ages, and abilities to be a part of our future history. Tony Mann Turned A Nightwatchman Role Into Cricket History
His Brilliant Century Helped Australia Pull Off A Famous Chase 🇦🇺

During the second Test against India at the WACA in 1977-78, Australian leg-spinner Tony Mann produced one of the most remarkable innings ever played by a nightwatchman.

Australia were chasing a daunting target of 339 on a wearing pitch against India’s world-class spin attack. Mann was sent in late on day four simply to protect the specialist batters, but what followed became part of Test cricket folklore.

Showing fearless intent and superb footwork against Bishan Bedi and Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Mann attacked the spinners with confidence and composure. He scored a magnificent 105 from 165 balls, including 10 boundaries, becoming only the second nightwatchman in Test history to score a Test century.

His extraordinary innings completely changed the course of the match and helped Australia complete the difficult chase with two wickets in hand.

Tony Mann walked in as a nightwatchman — and walked out with one of the most iconic innings in Australian Test history. 💛

A piece of our club history from the 1890's has very generously been handed in to us this morning by Lani and Charlie of Darkan (ex Bellevue)

It was found back in the 1940's/50's in Bellevue just north of the old Bellevue Railway station by Margaret Maxwell (Lani's mother).

According to some of the great research already done by Lani we understand that E (Emmanuel?) J Dow also
1901 - Represented Bellevue vs Belvedere
1905 - Best All Round Player - Central CC
1907 - Cricket, Leading Player - Swan Districts

According to the club minutes of 22/8/1898 similar medals were physically presented to C O Ferguson, H E Kent and J V Ferguson

This E J Dow medal, according to the same minutes, was due to be to be sent to him and now if it is possible we would love to connect, learn more and return it to the rightful owners.

Any further information to assist us in our search and to allow us to reconnect the medal with the family would be greatly appreciated.

Please reach out in the first instance via our
Club social media - Messenger
email - [email protected]

Thank you to Lani and Charles, and to all those who reach out to help in this quest.
