Swan SES Swan SES volunteers respond to Storm, Flood, Search & Rescue and Fire Support events. All of this makes us one busy unit!

As an organisation, the State Emergency Service’s primary function is to:

- Raise, train and equip an effective Volunteer based emergency service;
- Be the ‘hazard management agency’ for flood, cyclone, storm, tsunami and earthquake;
- Support other agencies (police/fire/ambulance) with land search, vehicle rescue, vertical rescue, cliff and cave rescue;
- Act in a support role to other combat agencies;
- Support emergency management activities at state, regional and local level;

Some of the duties we may be called to assist with are:
- Building Repair
- Conducting a rescue
- Providing first aid
- Establishing communications
- Evacuation support
…and much more

Swan SES is located in one of the biggest districts in the metro area. Our coverage not only includes the international airport, but stretches from the hills as far as Ballajura, and most suburbs north of Guildford as far as Gin Gin! We are also regularly called to assist other units when they require additional support both locally, and nationally.

Meet one of the most underrated pieces of SES equipment, the humble weeder tool!

(or as it is known in the SES "the Weather Event Extraction & Dynamic Elevation Rod"... we love acronyms!)

We carry it on almost every job, and it's often the single piece of equipment recruits are most surprised to see it in the toolbox.

What do you think it is used for?

Ewe-bee-what??
You might be surprised to learn we still train in the use of printed street directories such as the UBD or StreetSmart when we cover our search and navigation skills.

Why? Because Google Maps and GPS are not always guaranteed especially in the environments we may operate in, or when a storm knocks out power across multiple suburbs (as we saw last season).

It's always a highlight watching our younger recruits stare blankly at the Training Manager as we share personal tales of thumbing through a copy 5 editions out of date trying to triangulate the location of mythical "Ellenbrook", or the desperation of locating page 357 as you traversed pages.

So... do you still have one? And how many suburbs out of date is yours?

Swan SES will be conducting search and navigation training in the Stratton area should you see us out and about tonight.

No need for alarm however if you do find any frozen, or disoriented members, please leave them be and we will collect them on conclusion of the exercise 🧡 .
