Ever tried hunting for gems in the dark? One of our talented GCLC instructors, Tomio, shows us exactly how it's done on his YouTube channel, Leisure Hunter Tomio! (Tomio Taguchi) Using a special UV light, he uncovers a 'hot' fluorescent gem that completely lights up the darkness.

We loved his approach so much that we’ve made his video the very first feature on our brand-new Gold Coast Lapidary Club Member Playlist! Going forward, we’ll be using this playlist to share videos directly from our members, highlighting the education and art behind everything we do at the club - whether that's hunting rocks, silver smithing, faceting, or polishing cabs.

When you hear "precious stone," what comes to mind?

For most people, it is the sparkle of a faceted diamond or sapphire. But in the lapidary world, we often seek out a very different kind of treasure: Natural Art.

Sometimes, rather than just crystallising, the earth acts as a painter, taking millions of years to craft breathtaking scenes and familiar silhouettes hidden deep within ordinary-looking rocks. In the lapidary community, we call these rare finds "picture stones."

For many of us, the true joy of lapidary isn’t just shaping a stone; it is being the very first person in history to reveal the hidden narrative inside. It is a hobby that draws in artists, nature lovers, storytellers, and history buffs alike.

Take a look at the photos in this post to see two incredible examples of natural art revealed right here at the lapidary club, both formed within ancient Queensland petrified wood:

The Jurassic Cockatoo
This piece is a slice of petrified timber from Chinchilla, dating back 140 to 180 million years to the Jurassic Period. As the rough stone was slowly ground back and polished, a striking natural mineral pattern emerged within the fiery red matrix. It perfectly resembles a silhouette of an Australian Black Cockatoo resting peacefully on a tree limb - or maybe something else in your mind?

The Atmospheric Landscape
Every so often, a stone's natural banding creates an incredibly evocative scene. This piece of ancient timber features a moody background storm of deep charcoal and midnight blue tones, pierced by warm ochre and carnelian banding. The natural formations create a dramatic landscape featuring a distinct cross and a commanding, spirit-like silhouette with outstretched arms. The display face was polished glass-smooth to act as a viewing window into this atmospheric world, while the reverse side was left completely raw and untouched by human hands.

Lapidary is part geology, part art, and part treasure hunting. You never truly know what the earth has painted until you make that first cut.

If you are fascinated by nature, love working with your hands, and want to learn how to reveal these hidden masterpieces yourself, we would love to welcome you to the Gold Coast Lapidary Club!
