- reduce what we send to landfill and how we deal with waste
- give 6 hours of your time and skills once a month at Mernda Neighbourhood House

A few more of our May 16th repairs. What a team! Thank you to Dave who stepped in for Hiro and fixed people's bikes! The clothing press came in for it's second repair and Gill was able to fix it again. Thanks to Kim who diligently works on darning holes and other clothing repairs.

Someone brought in a lovely jacket that needed it's zip fixed. Unfortunately the bit of the zip that was broken was plastic and it was hard to repair. Eromi gave it a red hot go. She asked Lisa our shoe repairer if there was glue that would work but that wasn't possible. Eromi did her best and it was taken away to be worn with her best effort at repairing it.

It did pose a problem for our repairers though. Zips replacements take a long time. Unpicking them is time consuming. If you have a zip replacement, we would love if you could have a try at unpicking it and bringing the garment in with a replacement zip to be sewn back on.

We will be looking for clothing repairers to join our team. If you have sewing or mending skills we would love to hear from you. Once we have a bigger clothing repair team we will create separate zip replacement bookings. 🧵🧶🪡👕

A belated post from our May 16th Repair Cafe.

This video player was brought in because the tray wasn't sliding out. The little elastic band around the wheels was the problem (not very technical language). Sasha applied some lubricant and it did the trick. Such a small component that might be hard to replace and with rubber items they can degrade. Happy ending though. It was fixed!

If you can, please bring any spare parts, fabrics, zips or yarn needed for your repairs. We don't have stocks of these available.

Yesterday (21st March 2026) we a had another great Repair Cafe. (long post)

Thanks to our amazing team many of the items brought in will now have a second life and won't need to go to the tip.

But, not all the things that are brought in are repairable. Yesterday, Gill looked at a Robo vacuum cleaner that had a damaged plastic fitting under the cover. It's impossible to fix something like that. We spoke about getting a 3-D printer but that poses some problems too. The owner will investigate buying a new cover and will have to weigh up the cost of the new part vs buying a new vacuum cleaner.

This is one of the dilemmas of design and manufacturing that is part of the ongoing discussion of a global Right to Repair Movement.

Despite not being able to fix the vacuum cleaner, the team did fix this vintage fan! Gill fixed the electrical/mechanical problem and just as the happy customers were taking it away the Bakelite cuff broke. The fan had been sitting in a friend's garage for some time and Bakelite is prone to breaking with age. Sasha came up with a solution and the customers went to purchase a hose clamp which did the trick!

We also met some potential new skilled volunteers including a Mernda Neighbourhood House neighbour and welcomed Sindy who will help with the overall running of the event.
