Hi everyone,
Following Wednesdayโs Council meeting, I wanted to provide an update on where things currently stand with the proposed CBD traffic changes and the discussion that has sparked this recent media coverage.
As many of you are aware, there is strong concern from our local business community regarding elements of the proposed traffic plan. Feedback shared at the meeting reflected what many of us have been hearing directly โ that there is significant opposition to restricting access through the CBD, introducing one-way sections, and relocating parking.
A key issue raised was accessibility, particularly for our ageing population and those with mobility challenges. Many businesses rely on convenient, close parking, and there is genuine concern that moving parking further away will impact both customers and traders.
There are also concerns that the proposed changes may shift congestion rather than solve it, pushing traffic through alternative routes, roundabouts, and crossings โ and potentially making movement through town more difficult overall.
Importantly, confidence in the consultation process was also discussed. Some feedback presented at the meeting highlighted a perception that community input may not be fully reflected in the final outcome, which is something we take very seriously as your Chamber.
In terms of outcomes from Council:
A motion to reconsider or halt the current trial approach was not supported by the majority of councillors.
Council has resolved to continue with its current process, including reviewing community consultation feedback in detail .
A formal report is now being prepared, which will summarise all feedback received and inform next steps.
As your Chamber, we want to be very clear:
๐ We are advocating for outcomes that support accessible, thriving local businesses
๐ We are pushing for genuine consideration of community feedback
๐ And we will continue to ensure your voices are clearly represented in front of Council.
We recognise that everyone wants a vibrant, successful Merimbula CBD.
The question is how we get there โ and it is critical that any changes work with our community, not against it.
We will continue to keep you updated as the report is released and as the process moves forward.
In the meantime, please donโt hesitate to reach out and share your feedback with us โ it all strengthens our advocacy.
Thanks everyone for your continued engagement and support.
