๐Ÿ“กChestnut Teal update!๐Ÿ“ก

You might have been wondering what our ducks have been up to! It has been busy here at hq, so keep reading for some updates!

A second trapping trip was undertaken earlier this month, which was sadly unsuccessful. However, Clare, one of our female Chestnut Teals, was spotted at Morella Basin (see image below)

Clare has been spending a lot of time in the south lagoon but has also spent some time inland, at Morella Basin and at a small pastoral dam (see movement path below from the past three weeks).

๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ† ๐Ÿฆ† Wildlife research!

Last month GPS trackers were deployed on 12 Chestnut Teal (ducks) in the Coorong, South Australia. Honours student Freya Harrihill will use the data to gain valuable insights into their movement and habitat use. Chestnut Teal numbers have been declining over the past 40 years, and they have never been tracked before.

Freya is supervised by Dr Steven Delean and Dr Thomas Prowse.

Meet Courtney, one of our female Chesnut Teal ๐Ÿฆ†

Since she was caught at Parnka Point a few weeks ago, she has spent most of her time close by.

However, over the past few days, she has ventured to a small inland wetland, which is likely to have filled with the rain we have had in the past week.

It is interesting to see how the change in weather might impact their habitat preferences!

๐Ÿ“ก Exciting Tracking update! ๐Ÿ“ก

In the past 24 hours, Crystal, one of our female Chestnut Teal, has travelled over 70kms, from where she was caught three weeks ago at Parnka Point, to a small inland water source south of Salt Creek.

This is the furthest movement we have seen from any individual so far, and the first time an individual has been seen using an inland water source.

A male individual, Casper, seemed to have followed after Crystal last night, and has now stopped in the same bay by Salt Creek.

Keep following for more exciting updates!

๐Ÿ“กTracking update!๐Ÿ“ก

Over this weekend Clare, one of our female chestnut teals, moved over 10kms south of where we caught and tagged her three weeks ago!

See her movement path in the image below. The yellow lines indicate her movement over the past two days, and the green pin was her location as of last night. It seems she even had a trip across the sand dunes!

Keep following along for more movement updates!

Check out the latest movements from Calvin, one of the male Chestnut Teals! ๐Ÿฆ†

Calvin recently took a day trip from Parnka Point, where we trapped and tagged him two weeks ago, up to Lake Albert!
Calvin had a few stops along the way and spent some time foraging within the lake before returning home.

This is the furthest movement we have seen from an individual so far!

Keep following for more exciting updates! ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธโœจ

๐ŸŒ๐Ÿฆ†๐Ÿ” New Research Announcement ๐Ÿ”๐Ÿฆ†๐ŸŒ

We're thrilled to unveil a new scientific endeavour: tracking the movement of ducks using cutting-edge GPS technology! ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ๐Ÿ”ฌ

Our team is embarking on an ambitious journey to understand the intricate patterns of Chestnut Teal behaviour and movement. By outfitting these feathered navigators with GPS tracking devices, we aim to unravel the mysteries of their movements throughout the Coorong, Lower Lakes, and Murray Mouth (CLLMM) region of South Australia ๐Ÿ—บ๏ธ๐Ÿฆ†

This is the first time Chestnut Teal have ever been tracked using GPS. Our study will shed light on the factors influencing duck habitat selection, foraging strategies, and feeding behaviour ๐ŸŒŠ๐ŸŒŸ

Join us as we delve into the world of avian ecology, uncovering the hidden pathways and ecological cues that shape the lives of these remarkable waterfowl. ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ” ๐ŸŒŸ๐Ÿ”ฌ๐Ÿฆ†
