The Remarkable Yard Dog Committee was formed in 2012 as a sub-committee of the Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society with the intent of hosting sheep dog trials at Melrose to increase awareness about the benefits of usi
ng a well-trained dog. It quickly formed a close alliance with the South Australian Yard Dog Association and now conducts events that include:
- South Australian State Championship – Utility Sheep Dog Trial: This annual trial has been held at Melrose since 2015 and attracts some of Australia’s best competitors with teams of dogs that include National and State Champions. Spectators travel extensively from both urban and rural areas of Australia to attend.
- Melrose Show Yard Dog Trial: A more relaxed style of trial held in-conjunction with the Melrose Show in October that provides an opportunity for local and less experienced competitors to become involved with dog trialling. Committed to the effective use of sheep dogs within the industry, the committee has hosted several training clinics with well-respected instructors to help people develop the knowledge and skills needed to train their own dogs. These clinics have been excellent learning experiences that are well supported and valued by attendees. Through these events and clinics, the Remarkable Yard Dog Committee aims to:
• Promote good stockmanship and minimal stress handling of livestock
• Provide opportunities for producers, industry workers and the general public to interact with dog breeders and trainers; and to observe well trained working dogs in action
• Develop communication and relations between various facets of rural industry
• Provide valuable social opportunities within our community
In 2020, with assistance from Drought Communities Funding, the Committee constructed new sheep yards at the Melrose Showgrounds to promote sheep dog training, competitive trials and community interaction and well-being.
