The Alliance is a national advocacy organisation that works to prevent harm from gambling. the gambling industry in regards to harm.

𝗠𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲: 𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗚𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗥𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗡𝗧 𝘁𝗼 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺

The Alliance for Gambling Reform has endorsed an open letter calling on the Northern Territory Government to put people before gambling industry profits. With almost all of Australia's largest online bookmakers licensed in the NT, the Territory has the opportunity to protect people from gambling harm right across the country.

The open letter, led by Independent Member for Johnston Justine Davis MLA, has been signed by more than 30 community leaders, health and social service organisations, researchers, people with lived experience, and federal MPs. It urges the NT Government to support Ms Davis's private member's bill, which will be introduced to NT Parliament this Wednesday. The bill would make preventing gambling harm a clear purpose of the Territory's gambling laws, ban inducements such as bonus bets and VIP schemes, introduce monthly deposit caps for young people aged 18 to 24, and strengthen conflict of interest rules for the NT Racing and Wagering Commission.

Australians lose more to gambling per person than any other country in the world. Tim Costello says "Gambling harm is tearing through families and communities in the Territory and across Australia. The consequences are devastating: domestic violence, mental health impacts, children going without food on the table, and at worst, su***de. It's time our laws prioritised public health over private profit, and the NT can lead the way”.

"I'm a huge NRL supporter, notably Bulldogs, born and bred in Belmore 😊

What was once a sport centred on community, family and passion is now saturated with gambling advertising. You can't watch a match without being bombarded by betting promotions, odds updates and gambling messages.

The most worrying part is what this is teaching our kids. We're creating a generation of young fans who see gambling as a normal and expected part of being involved in sport. When children can recite betting brands as easily as team names, we have a serious problem.

Gambling harm doesn't just affect the person placing the bet. It impacts partners, children and entire families. That's why it is so troubling to see these messages woven so deeply into a game that so many families watch together.

Rugby league deserves better.

Fans deserve better.

And our children deserve the chance to enjoy the game without being conditioned to believe gambling is simply part of the experience."

Senator Paul Scarr stood up in Federal Parliament and read our words into the official record.

Australians lose more to gambling than any other country on earth, per capita. The latest reform package won't change that.

The ACT government's new gambling reform package sets a new bar for tackling poker machine harm in Australia - but there's more work to do.

The Alliance welcomes strong measures like the ban on ATM/EFTPOS withdrawals, simpler self-exclusion, and a long-term reduction in machine numbers. These are real wins for the community.

But cashless gaming alone isn't a fix. Without mandatory loss limits and enforced breaks in play, people can still lose more than they can afford, and move between venues to sidestep the safeguards.
