🌸 We’re taking a little Spring break! 🌸

That’s a wrap on Term 3! Selby Community House staff and classes are taking a well-earned break over the upcoming school holidays.

Our office will close from 3.30pm Friday 18 September and we’ll be back from 9am Monday 5 October, refreshed and ready for Term 4! 🌿☀️

And we have some very exciting news to head into the break with… Structural repairs to Selby Community House are now complete! 🏡🎉

It’s been a long road, but in Term 4 we’ll finally start bringing some of our activities back home to Selby, while others will continue at Monbulk Hub until the end of 2026.

Our Selby Childcare service will remain at Menzies Creek Primary School until the end of 2026, before returning home too.

💚 And from January 2027, ALL programs and Selby Childcare will be back home at Selby Community House! We can’t wait to have everyone back under the one roof again.

🎤✨ MIC DROP #2 – WHAT A NIGHT! ✨🎤

Last Friday night, our young people absolutely blew us away at Mic Drop #2: Youth in the Hills!

We had a fantastic turnout of performers and an equally wonderful audience there to cheer them on. There was so much courage, creativity and talent in the room – and every single person who stepped up to that microphone helped make the night something really special. ❤️

From music and singing to spoken word and more, our young performers put on such an entertaining and wonderful show. We couldn’t be prouder of them for getting up there, having a go and supporting each other along the way. What an incredible amount of young talent we have right here in our Hills community!

Our two feature performers Millie Jane ._.jane & Steph were both equally amazing and really inspired all our young performers.

A huge thank you to the Victorian Government through DFFH, whose Youth Fest Grant made Mic Drop #2 possible, and to Yarra Ranges Council for their ongoing funding and support of Selby Community House.

Thank you to Daniela De Martino MP, Member for Monbulk, for joining us again this year and continuing to show such wonderful support for Selby Community House and our local young people. We also loved having Janette Scott from Yarra Ranges Council there to share the night with us.

A massive thank you to the fabulous crew from 3MDR 97.1FM for once again supporting Mic Drop and providing the fantastic sound engineering on the night. Having professional sound and technical support gives our young people the experience of stepping onto a real stage, behind a real microphone, and being treated like the performers they are. 🎶🎧

And finally, thank you to our incredible young MC Ollie, Selby Youth Group, local Venturers & other volunteers, families, friends and everyone who came along, helped out, clapped, cheered and encouraged our performers.

It really was a beautiful night of community supporting young people to be brave, creative and themselves.

What a wonderful day we had on Thursday with our fabulous Wise Ones social group!

Everyone piled onto the bus with our lovely driver Lee from Tour the Valley and headed off to Kilsyth for a day of op-shopping, lunch and plenty of laughs along the way.

Our lucky group of ladies hit up the fantastic row of op shops in Kilsyth, with lots of bargains bagged and treasures found! We then enjoyed a delicious lunch together at Club Kilsyth before squeezing in a little more shopping for the afternoon.

But days like this are about so much more than finding a bargain. They’re about getting out and about, sharing experiences, having a laugh, fostering friendships and making new connections. And judging by the smiles, we think this outing ticked every box!

A huge thank you to Australia Post for supporting our Wise Ones program through their Community Grants program and helping us make wonderful days like this possible.

And thank you to Lee for getting us all there and back safely – and joining in the fun!

We’re already looking forward to the next Wise Ones adventure!

Selby Community House (and indeed Neighbourhood Houses throughout most of Victoria!) are DESPERATE for increased funding, so we can all continue doing the work we love with our communities. It would be so sad to see more Houses close through lack of government support and funding!

We’re getting very excited for this Friday night, and there’s a great write-up about Mic Drop: Youth in the Hills in this week’s Star Mail – Ranges Trader edition, online now and out in print tomorrow!

Mic Drop is all about giving local young people a stage to share their talents, build confidence, connect with others and have a whole lot of fun along the way.

After such an amazing response to our first Mic Drop, we can’t wait to do it all again this Friday! 🎶✨
