Breast Cancer Network Australia A future with no life limited by breast cancer.

13/10/2026

The data exists. The solution exists. Now we need action.

To mark metastatic breast cancer awareness day, Jess Giampetrone & Vicki Durston joined the ABC News studio to speak about lived experience and the importance of data.

Without accurate data, it's harder to understand the true impact of metastatic breast cancer, plan services, direct resources and improve outcomes for people affected.

The solution is ready. What's needed now is commitment to implement it.

Every person diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer deserves to be counted.

12/10/2026

Today, on Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, we're sharing the voices of people living with metastatic breast cancer. 💗

Last year, through the Together We Count initiative and our partnership with the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, Australia achieved a significant milestone:

For the first time ever, we had a reliable estimate of the number of people living with metastatic breast cancer.

But our work cannot stop there.

While Australia can now estimate how many people are living with MBC, our cancer data systems still do not routinely identify or track people living with metastatic disease. This means it's harder to ensure the right care, support, services and research reach those who need them most.

Here at Breast Cancer Network Australia, we're advocating for a future where people living with metastatic breast cancer are counted, heard and supported.

Because no life should be limited by breast cancer.

What does progress look like? 💗

It looks like researchers, clinicians, advocates and people with lived experience coming together with a shared goal:

A future with no life limited by breast cancer.

Last week, we attended the Australian International Breast Congress, joining and facilitating important conversations about the latest developments in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, care, and research.

These conversations matter. Because behind every breakthrough, every policy change and every research finding are real people and real stories.

We're proud to ensure the voices and experiences of people affected by breast cancer remain central to the conversation, helping shape what comes next.

When we talk about the whole story of breast cancer, carers are part of that story too. 💗

Supporting someone with breast cancer can have a big impact on your life. Whether you're a partner, family member, friend or neighbour, you may find yourself providing practical help, emotional support, or simply being there when it's needed most.

This National Carers Week, we're helping make carers visible by recognising the important role they play every day, and reminding you that support is always available for you too.

Being there for someone with breast cancer can be rewarding, but it can also be stressful and emotionally challenging. Looking after your own health and wellbeing is just as important. Remember, taking time for yourself isn't selfish; it's part of being able to continue supporting someone else.

If you're supporting someone affected by breast cancer, remember that support is always available for you too. 💗

Earlier this week, Australian comedian Judith Lucy shared her breast cancer diagnosis with her trademark honesty, vulnerability and humour. 💗

Her story is a powerful reminder of why early detection matters. Know your normal, attend your breast screening appointment when invited, and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t delay seeing your GP.

Judith’s story is a reminder of just how much there can be to process in those early days, with changing information, uncertainty and significant decisions to make.

For anyone navigating those moments, support is available. Our Helpline is free and confidential, whether you need someone to listen or information, and resources to help you take your next steps.

The more openly experiences like Judith’s are shared, the more we can build a fuller understanding of what breast cancer can mean. That’s at the heart of our latest campaign, The Whole Story: creating space for all experiences of breast cancer to be seen, heard and better understood.

In her own very Judith way, she’s starting important conversations and encouraging women to take action when it comes to their breast health.

Judith Lucy thank you for sharing your story so openly. ❤️

A special moment for Breast Cancer Network Australia and our entire community. 🩷

Last week, we gathered at Admiralty House to officially welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Sam Mostyn AC, Governor-General of Australia, as our Patron.

The evening began with an intimate roundtable, where women from our network shared their experiences directly with Her Excellency. They spoke openly about the realities of breast cancer, the limitations it can place on people’s lives and the gaps in treatment, care and support that we must continue to address.

Listening to lived experience has been at the heart of Breast Cancer Network Australia for more than 25 years, so it felt fitting that this important occasion began in exactly that way.

We then came together with people from across our community to celebrate the patronage and this new chapter for our organisation. It was wonderful to have our founder, current and former leaders from across the sector, people with lived experience, advocates, partners and supporters together in one room.

Her Excellency’s patronage is a significant recognition of our community, our work and our ambition for the future.

We are incredibly proud to have her support as we continue working towards a future where everyone affected by breast cancer can access the information, support and care they need to live well.

A future with no life limited by breast cancer. 🩷

Today is International FLAT Day. 🩷

After a breast cancer diagnosis, there are many decisions to make. For some people, that includes choosing whether to go flat after a mastectomy.

For Tahlia, flat closure wasn't about giving something up. It was about making the choice that felt right for her.

Every person deserves access to clear information, support, and the opportunity to make informed decisions about their body and their future.

Today, we're recognising and standing with those who have chosen flat closure, while continuing to advocate for choice, respect and person-centred care for everyone affected by breast cancer.
