A survey of threatened journalists in 53 countries found that most threats are from public authorities rather than criminal or armed groups. Almost 40 per cent of the journalists surveyed had been physically attacked, abducted, and/or arrested, while
nearly one in three reported receiving threats at
least once a month. The authors call on journalists worldwide to work together to confront enemies of the press. A big majority of those surveyed said those targeting them would worry about investigations into their assets and activities abroad such as real estate, bank accounts, political links and so on.

Phil Dickie’s stories in The Courier Mail in the 1980s set the scene for the inquiry by Tony Fitzgerald, QC, which led to the convictions of senior police, the imprisonment of politicians and the establishment of anti-corruption bodies.

A Four Corners program by Chris Masters finally forced the Queensland government to launch the Fitzgerald inquiry.

Dickie, an old-school, shoe-leather journalist, persisted investigating in the face of more than 20 defamation writs, a bullet fired into his then girlfriend’s house and inertia from the state government to act. To its credit, his newspaper backed him all the way.
