DAY 23 – MONDAY 24TH AUGUST
Seeking the Kingdom of God
Matthew 6:33

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you." — Matthew 6:33

Jesus spoke these words in the middle of teaching His disciples not to be consumed by worry. He knew that people would naturally be concerned about food, clothing, finances, and the future. He gently redirected their focus from earthly needs to an eternal priority…seeking God's Kingdom first.

To seek the Kingdom of God means making Christ the centre of every area of our life. It is choosing His will over our own earthly ambitions, His truth over the world's opinions, and His righteousness over temporary success. Seeking God's Kingdom is not a one-time decision but a daily goal of living within his arms, trusting that He knows what we need before we ask.

This promise is not that life will be free from hardship, but that God will faithfully provide for us when we place Him first. When our hearts are fixed on Christ, our outlook changes. Worry gives way to peace, fear to faith, and relying on ourselves to relying on our Heavenly Father..

Prayer Action Questions:
• Today, ask yourself what has first place in your heart.
• Are your thoughts dominated by earthly concerns, or are you intentionally pursuing God's purpose?
• As we seek His Kingdom through prayer, obedience, worship, and loving others, we discover that His presence is our greatest treasure.

Prayer:
May we begin each day with a surrendered heart, trusting that as we honour God above all else, He will guide our steps, meet our needs, and shape us into people who reflect His Kingdom wherever we go.

DAY 22 – SUNDAY 23RD AUGUST
Listening Prayer
1 Samuel 3:7-10
Devotional Thought – Alan Laurens

I recall the lovely chorus I first learnt in Company meetings (Sunday school) as a youngster, “Teach me how to love Thee, teach me how to pray, Teach me how to serve Thee, better every day; Teach me how to serve Thee, better day by day.” Prayer is a learning and listening experience, and the more we pray I would suggest, the more we learn!

A couple of points I want to note. Firstly, listening to God in prayer can move the experience of loneliness. When we pray, we discover that we are not alone, because we become aware of the presence of our Lord. Prayer is the way we connect with God. It has been said that prayer does not change God but changes the one who prays. Prayer gives opportunity to share our joys and sorrows and concerns, and everyday experiences whilst listening for guidance that will bring a deeper relationship with our precious Saviour and Lord.

Secondly, prayer strengthens and builds our spiritual experience and life. Jesus said, “Ask and it shall be given to you.” However, when we ask, we must ask with the right motives. James taught this when he said, “You do not receive because you ask with the wrong motives” (James 4:3). Prayer when prayed for the glory of God, will build us up, will build and strengthen our Corps, and it will open far more opportunities than we could ever expect in our own strength.

Prayer Action Questions:
• Spend a few moments and pray for those who are lonely in our community, that they will hear the voice of God.
• What is the Lord saying to you as you listen to Him?
• What will you pray for and believe for, for his glory today?

Prayer:
Almighty God, Heavenly Father, we thank you that when we pray and when we listen to you we experience your glory and power. Come and move among us today, by the power of the Holy Ghost, for your glory, in Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

DAY 21 - SATURDAY 22nd August
Reviving our Passion for Christ
Philippians 3:7-14

I’m no athlete! In Primary School, I remember trying out for the 100m race. I didn’t need to look back, most of my competitors were in front of me! Needless to say I wasn’t chosen. It was the Marching Squad, for me!

But in the “race of life,” I’ve had reason to look back. Was I a good enough daughter, wife, mother, friend? The list goes on… I’ve done things I’m not proud of. But, the forgiveness I needed, Jesus graciously and freely gave me.

I agree with Paul that knowing Jesus is more valuable than any earthly achievements. No longer need I keep looking over my shoulder. I have the freedom to leave the past behind, moving forward towards Jesus. Distractions may come, but my goal is to run my race, eyes fixed on Him, to one day see Him face to face and hear Him say “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

Prayer Action Questions:
• Are you still looking back, not yet free from guilt over your past, or do you have your eyes fixed on Jesus, knowing how much He loves you and has a plan for you?
• What would you like to hear Jesus say to you when you meet Him face to face?
• What is God telling you about the part you can play in our Church Community that will simply point others to Jesus?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for sending Jesus to show me how to live. Help me fix my eyes on Him without distraction. Please forgive anything still holding me back from fully following Your plan for me. Help me fully accept your forgiveness, knowing it’s in the past, so I can move forward with freedom to follow your plans for me, and find my unique role in our Church Community. Amen.

DAY 20 – FRIDAY 21ST AUGUST
Growing as Disciples
Colossians 2:6-7

As an 8-year-old, I timidly stood from my seat and walked to the front, kneeling to pray as I had seen others do. I was a bundle of nerves, but my convicted heart was full. It was a meaningful moment of childlike faith… but that short distance felt like climbing Mt. Everest!

Little did I know that this big decision would lead to a lifetime of many daily decisions to follow the way of Jesus. That very day I was asked if I would like to be a Junior Soldier. This started a journey of discipleship leading me on the right track to understanding the depth and wonder of living for Jesus!

Today’s passage from Colossians holds a challenge for us to pursue spiritual growth with intentionality – overflowing into gratitude. Take a moment now to look back over your life with Jesus and the journey of growth you are travelling.

Prayer Action Questions:

· When did your journey with Jesus begin? Express your gratitude to him
· Where on your path have you found the most significant spiritual growth?
· How is Jesus inviting you to live and grow in him today?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for saving me. I’ve found freedom, healing, hope, joy and purpose in you! You have led me through life and I’m grateful for everything I’ve learned – I’m different today because of you. Today I choose again to follow you, to pursue intentional spiritual growth, overflowing into gratitude. Thank you Jesus! Amen.

DAY 19 – THURSDAY 20TH AUGUST
Abiding in Christ
John 15:1-8
Devotional Thought – Jean Cassidy

Recently in Tasmania, I visited a vineyard for the purpose of applying what we heard about growing healthy grapevines to what Jesus said about himself as the True Vine and us being the branches.

The wonderful invitation from Jesus to stay closely connected with him; “Remain in me, as I also remain in you”, was so clearly illustrated to me. As well as the truth that Jesus wants me to flourish and be fruitful, not just in what I do for him, but by what he does in me, and this only happens through faithful abiding, staying connected, receiving all I need for this life through him.

This invitation to ‘abide’ though, is not simply me and Jesus, or you and Jesus. Remaining in Jesus is also remaining within His people. Think of a vine - so many branches all intertwined with each other, all receiving life from the same Source. A branch cannot flourish by itself. Fruitfulness happens in connection - to Jesus and to each another. As we ‘remain’ together, the love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and faithfulness become visible not just in our individual lives but in the shared life of God’s people.

Prayer Action Questions:

· Am I responding to Jesus’ invitation to ‘remain’ in Him?
· Who encourages me to ‘remain’ connected to Jesus?
· How am I helping and encouraging others to remain? How are my words, presence, hospitality, forgiveness and prayers strengthening the life of the Vine in our Corps community?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank you for giving us life through You. Teach us to remain deeply connected to you and faithfully connected to each other. Help us to encourage, support and strengthen each other so that together, we may bear fruit that reflects your love and brings glory to God. Amen

DAY 18 – WEDNESDAY 19TH AUGUST
Holiness of Heart and Life
1 Peter 1:15-16

Do you feel holy? Let’s be honest … we often don’t! It’s human nature to always think about our failures. You know the story; we do something in front of a group of people and 9 out of 10 people give us positive feedback and one person is critical…. and what is the feedback we think the most about? … that one critical voice!

In 1 Peter 1:15, 16 we read; “But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: ‘Be holy, because I am holy’.”

The holiness journey begins with God - it doesn’t begin with all the things we think we need to fix. In Alcoholics Anonymous there is a great saying that says, ‘you don’t have to be clean before you have a bath!’ God has provided everything we need to be cleansed by ‘His Holiness’. His love is new every morning, Jesus has broken the power of every sin we have committed or that has been committed to us, and The Holy Spirit is continually at work renewing us and transforming us day by day into the image of Jesus (2 Cor. 3:18) - this is His work.

For us the experience of Holiness is all about us moving further away from the things in our lives that spoil and moving closer to a holy God who transforms with ever-increasing glory. It is our closeness to His presence that transforms us and makes us holy - We’re Holy because He is Holy.

Prayer Action Questions:

In Lectio 365 devotions, the ‘Lords Prayer’ is shared in 2 sections: the first half is about ‘us engaging in God’s world’, and the second half is about us ‘allowing God to engage in our world’.
· Holiness is more about God than yourself – take time now to bring yourself close to God and reflect on his holiness.
· Are there areas of your life that you feel God wants you to allow him into, to do a work of holiness?
· Invite the Holy Spirit to fill you, transform you by his grace and make you more like Christ.

Prayer:
Holy Lord, God Almighty, I come before you knowing how great the distance is between your holiness and my commonness. I thank you for making me holy through the sacrifice of Jesus and for sending your Holy Spirit to live inside me, making me a holy temple where you dwell. Please receive my life today as a holy offering to you. I pray in the name of Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of my faith, who has made me holy by your grace. DAY 17 – TUESDAY 18TH AUGUST
Filled with the Holy Spirit
Ephesians 5:18b-20
Devotional Thought – Alan Laurens

Greetings to you each one in the name of our precious Saviour Jesus Christ. Being filled with the Holy Spirit is a beautiful, sacred experience for disciples of Jesus Christ. I have experienced this blessing in my own life over and over again. In our time of ministry in Tanzania, we saw miracle after miracle as the faithful Salvationists in this Territory prayed; for healing, for safety, for provision, for growth in their Corps, for greater love for one another and an indwelling of the Holy Spirit. And their prayers of faith have been answered over the years. And still being answered. As we are filled with the Holy Spirit, miracles will happen.

As the Spirit moves among us through prayer, we will also build a greater union and love for one another. It was Charles Spurgeon who said, “No man can do a greater kindness in this world than pray for me.” So when we pray for one another, we strengthen and build each other up. I have often thought we cannot have time finding fault with another if we spend the time praying for one another. Speaking about her prayer life, Mother Teresa stated, “God did not call us to be successful, but to be faithful!”

So the lessons of prayer come as we faithfully practice the daily Art of Prayer and find the incredible power, life-breath, miracle, and spiritual growth through the presence of God as we kneel at the Mercy seat where God will answer prayer.

I leave you with this thought: “Sometimes the silence in a prayer room is the power of prayer beginning to take effect…”

Prayer Action Questions:

· How will your life look different with a deeper indwelling of the Holy Spirit?
· What miracles do you believe for? Present them in prayer to God today.
· What is God calling you to be faithful with?

Prayer:
Lord Jesus, would you please fill me with your Holy Spirit today. Saturate me with your loving presence. Touch my heart anew today. May you lead me in the way everlasting, for your glory, and for the sake of the growth of the Kingdom of God. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

DAY 16 – MONDAY 17TH AUGUST
Repentance and Renewal
Psalm 51:10-12
Devotional Thought – Jo Brookshaw

The words of this scripture bring up the familiarity of the many times I have read, or sung these words. In passing, they are a good set of requests written by the Psalmist that we can pray too, but a deeper look reveals something much more difficult and disturbing…

This Psalm is attributed to David, following the time he had been confronted by the prophet Nathan. Nathan revealed the sins that David had tried to brush under the carpet: lusting after another man’s wife, sleeping with her, getting her pregnant and then manipulating circumstances so that the woman’s husband would be killed and the baby presumed to be theirs. It was definitely not conduct befitting of the King God had chosen to lead his people.

In David’s brokenness, as he recognized his sin, he composed a Psalm of repentance and renewal. It has become a template for heartfelt prayer – expressing ownership and sorrow for one’s sin, regret for the impact it has had on relationship with God and others, desperate cries for forgiveness, acknowledgement of God’s grace, gratitude for salvation and hunger for true righteousness.

What can be captured from this passage is a brutally self-aware and honest encounter with God that shows how David relies fully on God to move him from a dark night of the soul, through repentance and into a place of grace and spiritual renewal.

Prayer Action Questions:

· Seek God in the secret places of your heart, where you have sought to hide sin.
· Confess your sins before God, repent and through Jesus, ask for his forgiveness.
· Thank God for purifying your heart, washed clean by the blood of Jesus.
· Ask the Holy Spirit to fill your heart with joy.

Prayer:
Create in me a clean heart, oh God And renew a right spirit within me Create in me a clean heart, oh God And renew a right spirit within me

Cast me not away from Thy presence, oh Lord And take not Thy holy spirit from me Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation And renew a right spirit within me. Amen. (Create in me a Clean Heart – by Keith Green, 1982)

DAY 15 – SUNDAY 16TH AUGUST
Returning to our First Love
Revelation 2:1-7a

Today’s passage is a challenging one. Initially I find myself pushing back at the very words of Jesus. “What are you saying: I’ve forgotten my first love??” Though, when I pause for a moment and consider my own journey I can see truth in it for me today.

I remember when I first came to a deep understanding of Jesus’ death and resurrection. I was about 17 years old, and I found myself regularly kneeling and crying down at the mercy seat of our little corps in the western suburbs of Melbourne. Any time a conference came up, I wanted to go. Any time there was an opportunity to serve I put my hand up. Any time I could express my newfound faith in Christ to the world around me, I would do it. Now, I want to say, the fire hasn’t gone out, but when I read these words written originally to a small church in Ephesus, I am inspired to refocus my own heart towards Jesus.

You and I may be known for our deeds or our hard work, or our commitment to The Salvation Army; and that is commendable. Though the Lord encourages us this day to consider the depth of our relationship to him. May we be known by our deep, deep love for the Lord, expressed through the depth of our relationship to Christ.

Prayer Action Questions:

As you consider the words written to the church in Ephesus, I ask you in prayer to think about the answer to these questions:
· How can I live a life of full surrender to the Lord?
· What is the Spirit saying to the church in these days?
· What will that mean for me and my friends and family?

Prayer:
Dear Heavenly Father, we pray that you would rekindle afresh, within each of us, a deep, deep passion for Jesus. We lay aside every obstacle, every hurt and every distraction that has gotten in our way. We love you, Lord. Fill us anew with your Holy Spirit today.
