The epitome of Remembrance.
Lest We Forget.

Harold Jellicoe Percival never married. He had no children. By the time he died in a care home on the coast of England, at the age of 99, there was no one left. No close family, no old friends still living, nobody to stand at his funeral and say goodbye.

He'd served in the Royal Air Force during the Second World War, ground crew with Bomber Command, part of the team behind the famous Dambusters raid. A quiet man who had done his bit and then lived a long, solitary life.

Faced with the prospect of burying him with an empty chapel, his care home did a small, sad, hopeful thing. They placed a short notice in the local paper. A single man, no family able to attend, an old RAF veteran. Any service personnel who could come and see him off would be appreciated.

Then someone photographed that little notice and put it online.

It spread. Thousands of strangers saw it and decided that no veteran should be buried alone.

His funeral was held at 11am on Armistice Day, the exact hour, decades on, that the guns of the First World War fell silent. And they came. Over 200 people packed the crematorium, veterans, serving soldiers, bikers, ordinary members of the public, and when the room was full, scores more stood outside in the rain.

A man who died with no one was sent off by hundreds.

"You have come in numbers surpassing anything expected," the vicar told them. "Not because you knew him, but because each of us shares a common humanity" 🤍

Today, the Caesia Gardens Retirement Village unveiled its Place of Remembrance, where residents can acknowledge our Defence personnel, past and present.
It has taken over a decade of commitment by various residents, starting in 2009.
CSRSL President Peter Burquest and members of the sub-branch attended the formal celebration of its completion.
A place where residents can attend Anzac Day and Remembrance Day services or take a moment to reflect on our country's war history.

Veterans, service members, and their families take note ….

In just two weeks, the biggest reform of Australia’s veteran support system in more than a century will take effect.

From 1 July 2026, the current complex compensation system will transition to a single framework under the enhanced Military Rehabilitation and Compensation Act — a major step towards making support simpler, easier to access and more responsive to the needs of serving personnel, veterans and their families.

In an address to the The McKell Institute, Minister for Veterans' Affairs and Defence Personnel Matt Keogh confirmed that no veteran or family member will lose existing entitlements or experience any interruption to current payments as a result of the reforms.

Minister Keogh also announced the appointment of Brendan Cox as inaugural CEO of the new Veteran and Family Wellbeing Agency, which will commence operations on 1 July.

The changes are a key response to the Royal Commission into Defence and Veteran Su***de and reflect a broader shift towards prevention, early intervention, recovery and lifelong wellbeing for veterans and their families.

RSL NSW welcomes reforms that make it easier for veterans and families to access the right support, at the right time.

For 110 years, RSL Australia has stood beside those who have served. As these once-in-a-generation reforms are implemented, RSL NSW will continue working with Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs and the veteran sector to ensure no veteran or family is left behind.
