Curious about what’s happening behind the scenes at Nūl? On Sunday, our Melbourne team welcomed some new faces and came together again for a powerful workshop reflecting, collaborating and planning towards Nūl’s future events and initiatives. It was another productive day filled with collective effort and meaningful conversations.

The Jungle and the Sea touches on themes that are extremely relevant to the work we are doing at Nūl. We were grateful for the opportunity to experience the play, as it gave our team a different context of the complexities relating to the Sri Lankan and diaspora experience through an emotionally compelling narrative about the Sri Lankan Civil War and its impact, further to our on the ground work.

We asked some of our Nūl team members desh, Siobhan and Emily for their thoughts on the play and its connection to what we're building at Nūl and the greater landscape of Sri Lanka and within the global diaspora community.

Calling all theatre lovers and food lovers!

Nul partner Lankan Tucker is hosting a special event celebrating Melbourne Theatre Company’s performance, The Jungle and the Sea.

Come along for lunch at Lankan Tucker, followed by the rare opportunity to meet and mingle with the cast and performers of The Jungle and the Sea.

This is a one-off chance to connect with the cast, ask questions and hear the stories and ideas behind the production.

Identity is more than a name. It is memory, belonging, knowledge, and the stories carried from one generation to the next.

It was a privilege to sit with the Coastal Vedar community and learn from conversations about preserving culture in the face of change. Community members reflected on identity, barriers to educational opportunities, the lasting impacts of historical policies on recognition, and the importance of protecting language, ritual, and traditional knowledge for future generations.

Traditional practices, including honey hunting and cultural ceremonies, continue to connect people to place, history, and one another. These conversations remind us that culture is not something left behind. It is lived, shared, and strengthened when communities have the space to define their own future.

Reflecting on Fragments of Us,

A glimpse into opening night, featuring the powerful performance by Vaishnavi Sarode and Chenuli Haththimuni.

The performance explored two distinct yet converging stories centred around identity, unfolding simultaneously.

More than 50 young people from Batticaloa and surrounding villages across the Eastern Province came together for our workshop. Travelling from communities spanning more than 40 kilometres, they represented different faiths, experiences and backgrounds.

Through listening, new ideas were shared and meaningful connections were formed. Together, they spoke of their hopes, challenges and commitment to strengthening the communities they call home.

It is through relationships like these that stronger communities are woven, one conversation at a time.
