We have enjoyed a wonderful few weeks this January as Melbourne welcomed the world’s best tennis players to our shores. A highlight for the Foundation has been our partnership with Investa, a leading Australian real estate management organisation. Through their Melbourne assets at 567 and 120 Collins Street, the Foundation benefited from Investa’s January fundraising initiatives, where their building communities had the chance to win fantastic tennis-themed prizes, including a group coaching session at VTA and proceeds from their Friday Flower auctions. We are sincerely grateful for their support and look forward to continuing this valued partnership.

COMMUNITY OF SPIRIT
The weather turned up trumps for us to celebrate the second annual Foundation Day event on Sunday 23rd March. Held at the Powlett Reserve VTA venue, we enjoyed a beautiful Melbourne early autumn afternoon and evening. As last year, a number of intrepid VTA coaches put them selves forward to be auctioned off to the highest bidder to partner them in a competition to the death – or at least to win the competition and have their names engraved on the trophy. The theme this year was ‘Community of Spirit” and the coaches’ themes ranged from “Pandamonium Paddy” to “Let us prey Jack” and “Top Koality Jose”. Ten teams competed against each other through a round robin event to determine the four teams for the semi-final playoffs. The event was won by “Don’t worry, be hoppy Roberrrrrrto”, and his partner Carla. Congratulations to you both.

Spectators enjoyed some fun triples and other rather energetic games, in between chowing down on an endless supply of wood-fired pizzas, and liquid refreshments. A wonderful time was had by all.

There is of course a serious side to all this, as the event is a major fund-raiser for the Foundation, and helps us to support our programs, enabling access to tennis for adults and children facing social and financial challenges. Our major program for support this year is to enable students at the Victorian College for the Deaf participate in and benefit from the sport of tennis. With our Foundation themes of inclusion, community, empowerment, and diversity the evening has raised close to $8000 (and still rising) to support our work. We also launched our Foundation website (VTAfoundation.org.au) and our Supporters Club, inviting the tennis community to help is with our aims by practical input and financial support. Thank you to all who are donating time, skills and money to our efforts.
