Over the past nearly 15 *very unpredictable and particularly challenging* years, there has been a constant in my life that has genuinely and fundamentally kept me, and this organisation, going.

This week, our Chair, my mentor and dearest friend, the indefatigable Angela Scaffidi, was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her ‘significant service to the community through philanthropic initiatives’, and we couldn’t be prouder.

When Dan disappeared, our world flipped upside down. We had no idea what to do or who could help. So my friend Sal asked her boss if she could help, and days later, I walked into Ange’s boardroom crying, depleted, defeated. We instantly bonded and she said, ‘I will do whatever I can for as long as it takes,’ and she meant it.

No one knew that 18 months later I’d start a charity (for which she said we’d need an office, as she offered her beautiful CBD space, ongoing).
Naturally, she was appointed Chair (Dad: Treasurer, Mum: Secretary/cake bringer) and she has provided immeasurable guidance and support in a myriad of forms ever since.

She’s answered panicked 5am calls in an Uber to the TV studio to allay my nerves, she’s introduced me to some phenomenal people (some of whom are our few major donors that – along with our invaluable tribe of monthly donors – keep the charity afloat), she’s cried with me, my family and with our Missed families, she’s given me clarity and calm when I’ve been completely overwhelmed by the workload, she’s helped coordinate 6am fun-run fundraiser team gatherings, she’s given us several members of her staff for a seemingly growing number of hours per week, she’s presented our work on esteemed national and global stages, she’s delivered more Unmissable coffee cups to more Melbourne cafes than could be counted, and she’s always invited and included us – the pro bono client – as if we were the firm’s most important.

What I respect most about Ange is her unmatched dependability.
She was there in ways I still can’t put into words on the worst, most traumatic day of my life. I reflect on that a lot – how she doesn’t shy away from discomfort.

And even though her calendar is the stuff of nightmares, she still finds time to follow developments with our families’ cases and offer help. Her compassion and capacity for this community is beyond measure.

I will never be able to express the depth of my admiration and gratitude to this woman. She is extraordinary, and her boundless generosity and endless encouragement are the biggest part of the reason this organisation still exists.

Ange, on behalf of everyone who’s directly and indirectly received your kindness, thank you and congratulations for this well-deserved recognition. I know all the attention is making you cringe, and I’m sorry, but it had to be done. And while we’re at it -- HAPPY BIRTHDAY for Monday!!

As the year draws to a close, we know the holiday season can be especially heavy for families of long-term missing loved ones – birthdays, festive gatherings and family traditions exacerbate their absence.

Some families might honour them with an empty chair at the table or a gift under the tree. Others will simply get through the day however they can.

We encourage those living with ambiguous loss to do and feel whatever is right for you.

We're thinking of you and your loved one always, but especially during this time 💙

With care, and in solidarity,

The Missed Foundation

It’s here! National Missing Persons Week (NMPW) kicked off yesterday, marking the beginning of our inaugural fundraiser: Missed in Motion 🤸‍♀️

We’ve got more than 100 people around Australia (and beyond) doing a remarkable variety of challenges – rollerblading, bushwalking, skipping, drumming, hula hooping, pickleball, kickboxing, bowling, planking, triathlons, basketball, and all the classics – to raise awareness for the issue of missing persons, and much-needed funds for our charity. We just hit $45K, hoping to reach the $50K goal (that I thought Lili was mad to think possible…!!) 🔥

Families are embarking on some extraordinary, symbolic and deeply moving challenges to honour their loved ones and do something positive during NMPW, creating opportunities to reflect, make meaning, connect with friends and community, and generate their own media attention to remind the public of their plight.

Suffice to say, our choose-your-own-adventure fundraiser has already proven to be a hit so y’all can start thinking about what challenge you’ll do for Missed in Motion 2026, because – as above – any motion will do! 💗

It’s hard to explain what we ‘do’ here at Missed because it’s eminently varied, but here’s one example.

Two years ago, I was approached by veteran journo and author Helen Thomas. She was working on a podcast about Julie Ann Garciacelay, a young Californian woman who disappeared in North Melbourne in 1975.

Helen and I caught up over coffee a few times, where she’d occasionally whip out a recording device for some impromptu lines, when last August she mentioned that Julie’s 92-year-old mum Ruth wanted a plaque for Julie in Melbourne.
Time was of the essence, as it so often is in this space.
So immediately after that meeting, I contacted a Lutheran Church, and within a matter of days I’d met with the lovely Pastor James from St Johns in Southbank (inner city Melbourne).

While I liaised with Helen (who’d established a methodical communication line with internet-less, mobile-less Ruth) to organise the plaque, James – to our absolute delight – went about coordinating a service for Julie after which the plaque would be laid. He then went further above and beyond, and offered to plant a tree of Ruth’s choosing for the plaque to be laid with. Better yet, he was going to livestream it all so that Ruth could watch it from her neighbour’s home amongst the Redwoods.

Between lining up media that Ruth was comfortable with, designing an order of service, and waiting for the bronze plaque to be cast, I realised I’d be connecting in California en route to the Cold Case Symposium I was speaking at, and asked how Ruth would feel about me attending the service with her…

Being there with Ruth, then spending the following day with her in her home (watching Carol Burnett highlights over a few of her famous ‘slushies'), is one of the most precious memories I have from this work we do.

Ruth has told us numerous times that ‘God has kept her alive this long for this' 🥹
And though there have been some awfully close calls since (most recently yesterday), we’re very pleased to say that Ruth, now 93, is alive to see the podcast go out into the world today, 50 years since her beloved daughter disappeared.

Produced by our friends at Casefile Presents, it’s called Julie’s Gone (linked in comments, along with a link to the TV news piece from the service).

Please keep Ruth and Julie in your hearts as this awful milestone passes 💗

Six days until the week-long challenges begin, and we are so excited about the diversity and scale of the uptake!
We’ve even got participants on the other side of the globe 🌎
Such a beautiful way to show solidarity for those living with the long-term impacts of having a long-term missing loved one 💗

Today marks the 75th birthday of one of the most beloved men I've never met, Warren Meyer 🎈

His wife Zee is a champion, a warrior, and an unforgettably formidable force in this realm. She shouldn't have to be, but a succession of systemic failures has demanded she go to unthinkable lengths for the man she loves – her best friend – for more than 17 years.

It's a privilege, albeit heartbreaking, to know people with this level of commitment.

Sending love and strength to Zee and her family today ❤️‍🩹
