Malnutrition can affect anyone, but it's particularly common among older adults and people living with chronic health conditions. Many people think malnutrition only affects those who aren't getting enough food. In reality, around 50% of older Australians living in aged care or in the community are either at risk of malnutrition or already malnourished.🩺

Malnutrition can lead to reduced strength and mobility, slower recovery from illness, increased risk of hospitalisation, and a lower quality of life.📉 The good news is that malnutrition is often preventable and treatable, especially when the signs are recognised early.✨

As part of Malnutrition Awareness Week (14-18 September), we've shared an article exploring the signs of malnutrition, why it matters, and how services including dietetics, diabetes education, nursing and aged care support can help people stay healthy. 🍎🥦

R U OK? Day may be over, but the conversations and kindness are still going strong in our Adult Community Options (ACO) program. 💛
Our ACO clients in Parkdale found some creative ways to share the message this year, from making fortune cookie-style R U OK? cards filled with uplifting messages (which you can pick up from reception at our Parkdale site), to including R U OK? cards in the library book bags delivered to community members who can't get to the library themselves.
They also brightened their program rooms in yellow and took part in thoughtful conversations about what it means to check in with the people around us. Because R U OK? isn't just a one-day event. It's about creating a community where everyone feels connected, supported and reminded that someone cares. 💛

When Sarah was first referred to our mental health team, she was experiencing challenges with her physical and mental health and wasn't involved in any social groups or activities.🌿
With support from her BHN worker, Sarah identified meaningful goals and built the confidence to try new things. Since then, she's enjoyed a range of activities, including an art course, dinners, walking group and weekly low-cost fitness classes.
Sarah's noticed a positive impact on her wellbeing since connecting back into her community. Sarah's story reminds us that having someone who listens can make all the difference.✨

This R U OK? Day, a conversation could be your first step. 💛

Last week, our Health Promotion team hosted '"Boys will be Boys"–
let’s tell some different stories', a forum promoting gender equity in the early years.📚✨

Over 80 early years professionals came together to explore how they can intentionally and proactively challenge narratives about difference and support all children to be who they're meant to be. The forum supported early years professionals to explore their role in primary prevention of gender-based violence through the promotion of gender equity, respectful relationships, and all the things children can be.❤️🌱

We were joined by author and advocate Scott Stuart who powerfully explored the topic and its reach across books, media and pop culture, and left us with practical strategies to forge a different path.📖💡
We also featured a panel of incredible professionals sharing their experiences in a range of early years settings, with a key theme of the afternoon highlighting that everybody has a role to play. With consistent and ongoing reflection and conversations, we can start to tell a different story than the one currently being told.🌟
Thanks to Bayside City Council, Victoria for supporting this event.

🗺️ A small map making a big difference.
This simple, pocket-sized resource is helping people across Port Phillip find free food services when they need them most. 🍎💙
The Food Relief Map supports people experiencing food insecurity, those sleeping rough, and the services and workers who support them every day. 🤝
Our team recently visited local organisations across the City of Port Phillip to distribute printed copies, helping make the resource more accessible for people without reliable digital access. 📍📄 Its compact, foldable design means it's easy to carry, keep on hand and use when needed.

Today, our Harm Reduction team joined staff, volunteers and partner organisations to mark International Overdose Awareness Day. Seven Australians die from overdose every day and behind every number is a person – a loved one, a friend, a neighbour, a member of our community. Together, we remembered those lost to overdose and recognised the lasting impact their loss has on families, friends and communities.
The session also included training on how to recognise and respond to an overdose. With substances increasingly being contaminated or mixed with other drugs, overdose can happen unexpectedly. That's why carrying Naloxone can save lives, even if you or your friends don't use opioids. Follow sesh.ed for drug alerts and harm reduction information, and DM our Harm Reduction team at sesh.ed for free access to Naloxone.

Happy birthday, Mrs Wong! 🎉💯
This week, our Chinese Social Support Group came together with Mrs Wong, her family and friends to celebrate an incredible milestone, her 100th birthday. 🎂✨
Moments like these highlight what makes our community so special and the meaningful connections and friendships that grow through our social support groups. Mrs Wong's family shared their gratitude for the support she has experienced at BHN, and for helping make her 100th birthday such a memorable occasion.
Congratulations Mrs Wong on this remarkable milestone. We were honoured to celebrate with you and wish you happiness, good health and many more moments of joy. 💙

We're proud to be a member of Diversity Council Australia (DCA) and to continue strengthening a workplace where everyone feels welcome, respected and included.
As Australia’s leading independent peak body for diversity and inclusion, DCA’s research shows that inclusive and diverse teams not only better reflect the communities we live in and support, but are also more innovative, collaborative and able to deliver better outcomes.
We're excited about this partnership and supporting our employees, clients and communities together. 🤝✨

Our Gambler’s Help team joined financial counsellors from community organisations across Victoria last week at Parliament House for the Financial Counselling Victoria Exhibition.

The event provided an important opportunity to raise awareness of gambling harm and the free, confidential support available through Gambler's Help.
While spending on electronic gaming machines (pokies) has remained steady, we discussed growing concerns about the significant rise in online gambling with parliamentarians and their staff. Many were keen to continue conversations about gambling harm and help connect their communities with trusted support services and resources.

If gambling is becoming a concern for you or someone you care about, Gambler's Help offers free, confidential support.
